Purpose: With respect to the key role of the manager(s) in managing the academic library, this research introduced the effective role of library and professional managers in achieving their optimal performance to management of academic libraries in comparison with non-librarian managers.
Methodology: Research method is descriptive survey. Data collection was conducted through questionnaire. The research community involved managers and academic staff consists of 15 universities. In this research, managers in five practice areas: planning, organization, guidance, control, and organizational activities have been studied. SPSS (version 16) was used to analyze collected data.
Findings: The results of research identified that there is a significant difference between librarian managers' performance and non-librarian managers'.
Conclusion: This research proved the main role of librarian professionals in optimal performance of academic libraries' management.
