Infection with salmonella bacteria causes chronic and acute diseases in poultry that can cause significant economic losses to the poultry industry. SThe aim of the current study was to evaluate antibiotic resistance in salmonella infected layer flocks of East Azarbaijan province and to determine the presence of spvR virulence gene in isolated samples. A total of 200 liver and ovary samples were taken from 45 salmonella suspected flocks and cultured in selective and differential growth medium of salmonella. Antibiogram test to determine antibiotic sensitivity was done following isolation of bacteria.  PCR was used to determine the presence of spvR gene with specific primers. The results indicated all isolates were resistant to Erythromycin, Tetracycline, and Trimethoprim-Sulphamethoxazole, and the highest antibiotic resistance was against Doxycycline 94.3%, Danofloxacin 92.6% and Florfenicol 91.7%. Also, the highest sensitivity was against Fosfomycin 94.7%, and Enrofloxacin 74.2%. Results of molecular tests indicated that the spvR gene was present in the majority of layer flocks of East Azarbaijan province (in 88.46% of isolated salmonella). According to the results, it is necessary to prevent the spread of salmonella contamination amongst the laying hens in order to improve the poultry industry and the health of human communities. In hens, spontaneous tumors of the ovary and, less frequently, of the oviduct, are common. Leiomyoma and oviduct adenocarcinoma are the most common tumors of the reproductive tract in laying hens. The present article, reports a metastatic adenocarcinoma in an 80 week old commercial layer chicken flock in second-cycle of egg production in Mazandaran province. Eight dead layer hens were referred to division of avian diseases of Amol University. On necropsy examination, the mesentery and serosal surface of the intestine was studded with grayish white nodules. The ovary contained varying sizes of multiple single to lobulated grayish white nodules. Also, ascites were seen in some cases. Tissue samples were taken and placed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Microscopically, cuboidal neoplastic cells were arranged in acinar and tubular pattern in the serosal layer of intestine. The cells appeared as variable sized cuboidal cells with indistinct cell borders, eosinophilic granular cytoplasm, round nuclei, indistinct nucleoli and fine chromatin granules. The intestinal nodules showed neoplastic cells and structures similar to those of the ovary tumor. Manuscript profile

Infection with the Salmonella genus of bacteria causes chronic and acute diseases in poultry leading to significant economic losses to the poultry industry. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antibiotic resistance pattern of Salmonella serotypes isolated from a number of laying poultry flocks in the northwest of the country and to investigate its relationship with the performance of those farms. Eighty samples were taken from 20 flocks suspected of salmonellosis .The samples were cultured in selective and differential cultures of Salmonella. After isolation of Salmonella serotypes, the antibiogram test was performed to determine the antibiotic sensitivity. In order to check the performance of suspicious flocks, the history of the flock was obtained and the amount of mortality and production drop was calculated by statistical methods. The results indicated that 40% of the flocks were positive in terms of the presence of Salmonella, with 30% of the flocks affected by Salmonella gallinarum, 5% by Salmonella enteritidis, and 5% by concurrent presence of both Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella gallinarum. The highest antibiotic sensitivity of Salmonella serotypes was recorded from fosfomycin and danofloxacin with a frequency of 100% and soltrim with a frequency of 78.6%. The highest antibiotic resistance was observed against erythromycin with a frequency of 75% and chlortetracycline with a frequency of 53.6%. Based on the results, there was a statistically significant difference in  the amount of flock mortality and production drop between Salmonella negative and Salmonella positive herds (p<0.05). Also, more vigilant use of antibiotics is required due to the high levels of resistance shown by Salmonella against various antibiotic drugs. Manuscript profile

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of rations with different levels of energy on performance of laying hens. The experiment was conducted with two hundred and fifty six laying hens of commercial Hi-Line W-36 strain in a completely randomized design with 4 treatment and 4 replicates (16 laying hens in each replicate). Treatments included: (1) diet with amount of metabolizable energy recommended by NRC 1994 (as control group),   (2) diet with 10% higher level of metabolizable energy than recommended by NRC 1994, (3) diet with 10% lower level of metabolizable energy than recommended by NRC 1994 and (4) diet with 15% lower level of metabolizable energy than recommended by NRC 1994 that were used for 10 weeks (from 41 to 51 weeks of age). The results indicated that the amount of feed intake was significantly different among treatments (p<0.05). The highest amount of feed intake (130.50 g) was observed in treatment four with 15% lower level of metabolizable energy than recommended by NRC 1994. The amount of feed price was also significantly different between treatments (p<0.05). The lowest feed price per kilogram of egg produced (5705 Rials) was observed in treatment four with 15% lower level of metabolizable energy than recommended by NRC 1994. There were no significant differences in egg traits among treatments. It can be concluded that using diets with 15% lower level of metabolizable energy than recommended by NRC 1994 in laying hens, can reduce feed costs without affecting egg traits.     Manuscript profile

Abstract   This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of using different levels of urea and molasses on performance, some egg traits and blood serum biochemical parameters in late laying period of laying hens. This experiment was conducted with two hundred and sixteen Hy Line- (W-36) laying hens from 62 to 74 weeks of age in a 3× 2 factorial design with 3 levels of urea (0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75%) and two levels of molasses (0 and 3%). The diets included: 1) 0.25% of urea + 0 percent of molasses, 2) 0.25% of urea + 3 percent of molasses, 3) 0. 5% of urea + 0 percent of molasses, 4) 0.5% of urea + 3 percent of molasses, 5) 0.75% of urea + 0 percent of molasses, 6) 0.25% of urea + 3 percent of molasses. The results of this experiment showed that using 0.5% of urea and 3% of molasses did not have any significant effect in the performance and egg traits (p>0.05) and only produced significant decrease in blood glucose levels (p<0.05). It was concluded that using diets with 0.5% of urea and 3% of Molasses can improve economical efficiency of laying hens by reducing the amount of soybean meal in diets.  Manuscript profile
