This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral stress management on depression and social adjustment of mothers of mentally retarded children was. This experimental study with pretest-posttest control group design is the follow-up period; mothers of children with mental retardation mentally retarded schools in Ilam, Beck Depression Inventory (1996) and social adjustment Bell (1961) were completed. Of those who had a score higher than 60 mothers randomly selected and randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. The experimental group received training in 10 sessions of 90 minutes. After the sessions the treatment of both groups was tested and was followed a month later stage. Results obtained using analysis of variance with repeated measures and Bonferroni post hoc test were analyzed. The results show the average depression score in pretest and posttest in the experimental group had a significant difference, but the score was no significant difference in post-test and follow-up. The difference between mean scores of social adjustment in the pre-test and post-test in the experimental group was significant, but the score was no significant difference in post-test and follow-up. The results showed that cognitive-behavioral stress management training in reducing depression and increasing social adjustment of mothers of mentally retarded children have been effective.
