Abstract :
The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between using virtual social media in mobile phone and students’ academic procrastination, feeling lonely and mental health. This study was a descriptive-correlational research. The statistical population was made up of all third year high school students of public schools in Qom who were studied in 2015-2016 academic year. Out of the total 2414 students who comprised the population of this study, 334 were selected as sample based on Krejcie and Morgan table via a simple random sampling. Following visiting the schools, the aforesaid students were given and completed four questionnaires for data collection on using mobile phone’s virtual social media (researcher made), academic procrastination, feeling lonely and general health. The validity of tools was reported via face validity, criterion validity, internal consistency, and acceptable concurrent validity, respectively. The reliability, also, was calculated through Cronbach's Alpha coefficient which were obtained 0.88, 0.92, 0.89, and 0.88, respectively. Data analysis was carried out via Pearson Correlation test, linear regression analysis, and SPSS software. The results of the study revealed that the extent of using virtual social media has a direct relationship with academic procrastination and feeling lonely, and has a negative relationship with mental health. Furthermore, the variables of academic procrastination, feeling lonely and mental health contribute to predict the extent of using mobile phone’s virtual social media.
