Factors and consequences affecting the development of urban tourism based on sustainable development

Abstract :

Objective: Urban tourism development in line with sustainable development can contribute to the economic and environmental sustainability of cities, therefore, this study attempts to examine the factors and consequences affecting urban tourism development. Methods: This research was conducted with a qualitative approach and a systematic review method. Using a purposive sampling method, 22 articles on the subject published between 2014 and 2015 that addressed the causes and consequences of urban tourism development in line with sustainable development were selected and examined. Findings: The results of the research show that most of the articles examined were conducted with a quantitative approach and a survey method. Environmental quality, environmental factors, and tourism attractions were among the most important influencing factors. Also, the most important positive consequences were economic outcomes such as economic growth, employment, and increased income; And the most important negative consequences have been related to physical changes such as land use change and increase in construction and loss of valuable urban fabric. Conclusion: Considering the three dimensions of sustainable development in urban tourism development, it should contribute to the economic sustainability of the city, improve the quality of life of residents, and improve infrastructure and services, and create satisfaction, access, and comfort for urban tourists.
