Metadiscourse Markers in a Corpus of Learner Language: The Case of Iranian EFL Learners

Different issues have been probed in learner corpus research since the late 1980s.However, taking the im- portance of meta discourse markers (MDMs) in signposting academic discourse, their use in Iranian EFL learners‟ academic essays is an area of research in need of a more serious analysis. Contributing to this line of investigation, this paper reports a corpus-based study of the use of MDMs in the academic essays of Iranian EFL learners who have majored in English-related fields in Iran. For this, based on Hyland‟s (2005)model of MDMs, the recently-compiled Iranian corpus of learner English was analyzed for in- stances of MDMs and compared with a sub-corpus of the British academic written English. The findings indicated overuse in categories (interactional and interactive) and overuse and underuse in types of MDMs (hedges, transitions, etc.) in Iranian EFL learners‟ essays relative to the English-natives‟ essays, with more instances of interactional MDMs in the former compared with more uses of interactive MDMs in the latter. Suggestions have been proposed for such profiling of MDMs among Iranians as rooted indif- ferences between Iranian and English cultures, previous instruction, and so forth. Implications of the re- sults for English language teaching including explicit teaching of MDMs have been considered.

چکیده انگلیسی:

از اواخر دهه 1980، موارد مختلفی در تحقیقات مرتبط با پیکره های زبانی زبان آموزان توسط محققان مورد مطالعه قرار گرفته است. با توجه به اهمیت نقش نشانگرهای فراگفتمانی در هدایت کلام آکادمیک، بررسی استفاده از آنها در انشاهای آکادمیک زبان آموزان ایرانی زبان انگلیسی به عنوان یک زبان خارجی نیازمند تحلیل جدی تری است. از این رو، مطالعه ی پیش روی گزارشگر یک تحقیق پیکره بنیاد از بکارگیری نشانگرهای فراگفتمانی در انشاهای آکادمیک زبان آموزان ایرانی دارای بسندگی زبانی سطح متوسط در حال تحصیل در رشته های زبان انگلیسی به عنوان یک زبان خارجی در ایران است. بدین منظور، بر اساس مدل هایلند (2005)، استفاده از نشانگرهای فراگفتمانی در پیکره ای متشکل از زبان انگلیسی نوشتاری زبان آموزان ایرانی که به تازگی جمع آوری شده است بررسی شده و با یک پیکره نظیر بومی زبان های انگلیسی زبان (بخشی از پیکره انگلیسی نوشتاری آکادمیک بریتانیایی) مورد مقایسه قرار گرفت. یافته ها حاکی از کاربرد بیش از حد نشانگرهای تعاملی و تبادلی فراگفتمانی و نیز از کاربرد بیش از حد و کاربرد کم زیرمقوله های نشانگرهای فراگفتمانی (گزاره ها، نقش نماهای قالبی، عبارات احتیاط آمیز، نقش نماهای نگرشی و غیره) در انشاهای آکادمیک توصیفی دانشجویان ایرانی نسبت به بومی زبان های زبان انگلیسی بوده است. همچنین در میان ایرانی ها، نشانگرهای تبادلی فراگفتمانی و در میان بومی زبان ها، نشانگرهای تعاملی فراگفتمانی بیشتر مورد استفاده قرار گفته اند. پیشنهاداتی در راستای توضیح چنین نیمرخی از استفاده از نشانگرهای فراگفتمانی در بین ایرانی ها از جمله نقش تفاوت های فرهنگی بین ایرانی ها و انگلیسی زبان ها در بکارگیری چنین نشانگرهای فراگفتمانی ای، نقش تدریس پیشین، و غیره ارائه شده است. در انتها،  پیامدهای نتایج در امر آموزش زبان انگلیسی در ایران از جمله نیاز به تدریس مستقیم نشانگرهای فراگفتمانی بر حسب ژانر (گونه نوشتاری) مورد نظر مورد بحث قرار گرفته است.
