Population growth and housing demands have caused the cultural aspects of public spaces have been ignored in modern housing. Paying attention to open spaces is necessary as they are places to establish social interaction and thus increase the social security and create a sense of responsibility among residents. The main objective of this study is to find a way for the appropriate design of open spaces in high-density residential communities in order to promote a sense of place and community identity. In the first phase of this research, documentary studies are used to understand the basic definitions and information about the sense of place and its determinants. In the next step, survey method and Delphi technique are being applied to collect data. Experts were invited from faculty members of Shahid Beheshti’s Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, and IUST’s School of Architecture and Environmental Design. For the data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were used with the software SPSS version 21.0. According to the findings of this research, factors such as low-density of apartment, reduction in the height of the side with better vision, the view into green space, constant and adequate lighting at night, developing a safe walking route along the public spaces and the arrangement of the public spaces between blocks have a significant impact on fostering a sense of place in a residential environment. Using interior yards or green areas can help to enhance a sense of place. Trees or natural elements can be used in creating public spaces. The results show that existence of natural elements in open and semi-open spaces can create a sense of place effectively. Manuscript profile

3 - Examining the Relationship between Psychological Adaptation to Achieve Thermal Comfort with a Sense of Place in Urban Areas (The Case Study of Imam Hussein and Imam Khomeini Square in Tehran)

Most studies on thermal comfort in urban spaces have been focused on physical factors, while thermal adaptation is one of the most important factors in the perception of comfort. Up to now, in most studies on thermal comfort and adaptability of individuals with micro climatic conditions in urban public spaces or residential areas in Iran, just studies of physical and physiological factors and physical suggestions such as changes in the form of building, density, vegetation species, landscaping and land use planning have been conducted. Of course, there are some studies on thermal comfort perceived (not felt)and combination of physical and objective studies with mental, social and environmental psychological studies with a collaborative approach to the visitors to the space in some countries of the world; but the psychological variables studied (especially in the field of thermal adaptation) generally include the effects of the factors such as naturalness, expectation, experiences and time of exposure and perceived control on space. Although the mentioned variables have been not studied in the form of urban public spaces according to the climatic and cultural-demographic conditions of different regions in Iran in a comprehensive study, the main goal of the present study is the effect of the sense of place component on perceived thermal comfort and thermal adaptation of individuals which have been not considered in previous studies. By studying the relationship between the two concepts of thermal adaptation and sense of place, in order to promote the thermal comfort of the people in an urban space and generalize it to a variety of comfort conditions in a space, it is possible to decide better in the planning process to achieve the goals of an urban space. Since we will not have a space with a physical comfort, but without an adequate sense of place which encounters a lack of attraction of people compared to spaces that although the lack of comfort, but have enough sense of place. Therefore, expanding the concept of perception and its difference with feeling is one of the key goals of the present research. The hypothesis of the present study is that: "There is a direct relationship between thermal adaptation in order to reach thermal comfort and different levels of a sense of place in urban spaces. "The experimental model of this study has been extracted after conceptualization and explained by Delphi method and then, a questionnaire corresponding to each component of the model was developed by surveying in two urban spaces in Tehran city and filled out by 200 citizens presenting in the two places in cold season and then analyzed using statistical tests, including T‌-test, correlation and Beta. The results indicate that, it was also found that there is a direct correlation between the two variables of sense of place and individuals’ thermal adaptation in order to achieve the thermal comfort (the proof of the main research hypothesis). Finally, some strategies have‌ been provided to improve the thermal adaptation and sense of place and to increase the mentioned correlation. Manuscript profile

Bazaar is one of the most influential spaces in the Muslim city. During the formation of towns, bazaar often has multiple social, economic, political and cultural functions. This paper presents a study of traditional market and commercial complex in Kashan, to create a sense of place in environmental quality deals of the environment and its components involved in creating the sense of place. Therefore, factors affecting the sense of place and assess how to respond to the humanitarian needs of the modern and traditional market is intended in this research.Iranian traditional architecture, particularly Bazaar architecture, is a type of visual-perceptual architecture. The architecture which involves all senses includes the body; eyes penetrate in it; skin feels its texture; ears hear its interaction with people and nature; and muscles act and react to experience it. The designers of such environments could also make it possible for people to perceive conceptions and symbolic values. The architecture of Bazaar of Kashan, as one of the examples of Iranian bazaars, creates the sensory concentration system by embodying sensory incentives. In addition to this major system, corridors invite you to walk through them and discover the surroundings and peace can be found in places such as mosques, Timches and open spaces nearby. Based on the human being's perceptual processes in response to his needs, the architecture of Iranian traditional bazaars in the first place promotes psychological health of the society and then considers the connection with meaning. Architects considered all the human perceptual needs by utilizing all his senses and emphasized on cultural and identity issues by mixing religious forms with artistic designs. In the bazaar, perception happens as a result of crowding and privacy in the environment. In the first place, this solitude leads to relaxation, reflection, and afterward to a system of meaning based upon human consciousness which is acquired through his previous experiences and current culture eventually leading to an understanding of the values and aesthetics. In the Iranian bazaar, architects paid attention to all human senses and his perceptual needs and their mixed religious functions with spatial designs in order to emphasize on culture and identity-related issues. As the backbone of cities, Iranian bazaars have had a persistent connection with urban texture, causing such a strong public presence that they were considered the main crossing of the city.It seems that the recreation of a bazaar in the contemporary urban life addressed by architects, planner, and urban planners should be based upon the contemporary human perceptual process. Nowadays, bazaars are losing their value relative to other parts of the city and their economic role has decreased obviously. There have been competitors across the city for bazaars, which were not successful either in the building or strong relationship with clients. The research hypotheses are preparing the necessary information regarding the data collected and analyzed in SPSS software. Accordingly, the results confirmed that the components of sense of place is fully presented in traditional space and more specifically in the traditional bazaar. Manuscript profile

5 - Identity and Place; Phenomenological Approach

Identity can be defined as the sense that people make themselves through their subjective feelings based on their everyday experiences and wider social relations. Such experiences and relations need particular places. Places are significant centers of our immediate experiences of the world. In the past, human life was sincerely attached to things and places. Overall, there are two ways in which place has been related to identity. The first is place identifications. This refers to a person’s expressed identification with a place. In this sense, place can be considered to be a social category and will be subject to the same rules as a social identification within social identity theory. The second way in which place has been related to identity is through the term place identity which calls for a more radical re-evaluation of the construct of identity. Space is organized into places often thought of as bounded settings in which social relations and identity are constituted. Such places may be officially recognized geographical entities or more informally organized sites of intersecting social relations, meanings and collective memory. The concept of place, the uniqueness of particular places and place-based identities are hotly contested concepts in the contemporary context of increasing globalization and the perceived threat of placelessness. The forces of new technologies, globalization and ‘time-space-compression’ have sought to represent localized identities as historical, regressive characteristics, and have worked to undermine the old allegiances of place and community. But the burgeoning of identity politics, and now nationalism, reveal a clear resistance to such universal strategies. Places play a potentially important part in the symbolic and physical dimension of human identification. The concept of place, sense of place and place-based identities are widely used concepts to encounter threat of placelessness, the casual eradication of distinctive places and the making of standardized landscapes that results from insensitivity to the significance of place. Humanistic studies show that people alternately associated place with safety and security (feeling at home) but also to imprisonment and isolation. The place where one lives can be perceived as suffocating. Despite many studies using the concepts of place identity and place attachment, few have provided a clear and theoretically driven account of the relationship between place and identity. In this article, we used a phenomenological approach to understand involved factors of place which Strengthen place identity. Phenomenology is the interpretive study of human experience. The aim is to examine and to clarify human situations, events, meanings, and experiences as they are known in everyday life but typically unnoticed beneath the level of conscious awareness. We  begin with a review of place and identity and their relationship. This paper examines the role of place and identity processes. As a result a model is shown to guide designers to principles of place-based identity. Without a thorough understanding of place as it has human significance, one would find it difficult to describe why a particular place is special and impossible to know how to repair existing places in need of mending. The research method is a combination of both qualitative and quantitative, which is conducted in the qualitative phase to extract the components of the sense of place in context-oriented structures, semi-structured interviews, and in the quantitative phase, a questionnaire with a Likert scale is designed and provided to spatial users. The results are collected in ORIGINPRO software and analyzed by PC. The results show that in the age group of 20 to 40 years, the highest factor contribution is related to activity, memorableness, social interactions and security with a value of (1.000) and the lowest factor contribution is related to The direction of the sun is (0.262), doors (0.265) and windows (0.274). In the age group of 40 to 60 years, the highest factor share is related to security, natural landscape, memorableness, giving meaning with a value of (1.000); And the lowest factor contribution is related to slope and unevenness (0.254), skyline (0.311) and doors (0.315). In the age group of 60 to 80 years, the highest factor contribution is related to green space, natural landscape, and social interactions. , comfort and security with a value of (1.000) and the lowest factor contribution is related to the indices of size (0.256), direction of the sun (0.266), uneven slope (0.244).With the expansion of communication methods in the modern world, social relations have declined and decreased. In the built buildings, the communication with the environment and its perception through various senses has been weakened and has created spaces lacking the necessary efficiency and performance (Mahmoudinejad et al., 2008: 284) Development in modern cities, man, city and It has made architecture unfamiliar with meaning and feeling and has created a large number of unknown and meaningless spaces, which has been much more in different age groups (Daneshpour et al., 2009: 39). So it can be said that these buildings are designed only for certain age groups. In general, losing the idea of the place of life can be one of the dominant crises in the present era and it has caused a change in the perception of memories in the residential complexes of the modern world and has turned them into a place without spirit and feeling. (Aegei, 2008: 45) The effect that architecture has on the human soul in the short and long term is undeniable, the space can be from a dry and soulless and cold body to a body in which the sense and spirit of the place flows, currently in Today's cities are empty of spaces that are full of a rich sense of place. (Nurberg Schultz, 2003: 48) Interest in the sense of place has grown rapidly in recent years, and the concept of spending time has expanded to entertainment and a wide range of programs (Madanipour). , 2000: 68) The concept of sense of place is an interdisciplinary concept that is studied in sciences such as psychology, sociology, architecture and geography. However, paying attention to place belonging has a historical background (Nurberg Schultz, 2014: 52). Paying attention to sustainable architecture and its principles is more and more on the agenda of different countries. One of these solutions is to develop the characteristics of the region, such as the body and environment, and to pay attention to the culture of each region. In short, the application of all these things can be called regionalism. Regionalism is a theory that advocates resistance to various forms of superiority, globalization, and standardized constructs that reduce ethnic differences. This theory suggests methods and criteria to protect the revival and, if necessary, rebuild the life of the framework of the region's characteristics (Bayzidi, 1392: 10). It emphasizes the cultural, geographical and climatic aspects of a particular region. In this research, while examining the issue of the sense of place, and extracting its components, the effect of each component in the age group of 20-40, 40-60, 60-80 is investigated. The scope of the study is buildings that have characteristics are regionalism, and the verification of a component happens in the qualitative part. In this research, the question is answered that in each age group, which of the components has a greater contribution in creating a sense of place in the regional buildings of Khuzestan province. . 21 - Presenting the sense of place model of public spaces in the era of virtual spaces with Grounded theory (case study: public space in the center of Rasht city)

Among many theories regarding the relationship between space and humans, the concept of sense of place is the most widely used theory to explain the existence of place. From the environmental psychology perspective, humans need specific sensory, emotional, and spiritual experiences of the environment in which they are. These needs can be met through intimate interaction and identification with the place where they attend. This interaction, which is called the sense of place, is an important factor in the harmony between the human and the environment and leads to better use of the environment, the users' satisfaction with the environment, and ultimately, a sense of belonging, continuity of presence and use, and increased quality of life. The sense of place physically and psychologically leads to the connection between an individual and the place and enhances his attachment to the place. Although the topic of sense of place is not new, the need to pay attention to it from new angles has been emphasized in recent years. The creation of new social spaces and its expansion has had an impact on human social life. contemporary man can experience a space in which he has never been physically present. Therefore, it seems that the emergence of the digital age and the increasing number of users of virtual spaces can affect the concept of "sense of place". The present study aims to analyze the sense of place in public spaces in the age of virtual media and present a theoretical model to help improve citizens' sense of place in public spaces. There are two main research questions:1. What are the most important factors affecting the sense of place in real and virtual public spaces? and 2. How was the sense of place of the users of the public space in the center of Rasht city, and how has it changed in the last decade? To answer the first question, Sandelowski and Barroso's Meta-Synthesis Method and CASP checklists are used. To answer the second research question, the Grounded Theory method is used. In this part of the research, the main assumption states that the sense of place of the users of the public space in the center of Rasht City seems to have changed in the last decade. Because, it has experienced extensive physical changes (due to regeneration in 2016) on the one hand, and the spread of virtual media has affected all aspects of urban life, from employment to social interactions, on the other hand. In the open coding phase of the grounded theory method, 537 codes were extracted from 15 detailed interviews with experts and professionals in the research field, and finally, 18 categories were identified. The results of this stage include the formation of basic concepts and the resulting codes. Also, on a scale higher than the codes, an attempt was made to identify a more abstract concept to place them in categories representing the characteristics of the codes by comparing the codes with each other. The research results show that the expansion of virtual spaces has been effective in changing the sense of place of citizens in objective social spaces. This effect is observed in all three dimensions of activity, body, and meaning in urban spaces and it occurs in the form of the human scale, meaning, body, performance, environment, art and beauty, and non-physical and physical components. The public space in the center of Rasht City has witnessed more invitations and pauses and the emergence of new behaviors in the last decade. Categories such as acceptance of others, identity, hangout, etc. are the causes and consequences of this issue. Also, the spread of virtual media influences the interaction between humans and space, and thereby, the sense of place in a geographical place. So, by regarding it as the core category in grounded theory, the sense of place can show the relationships between categories and concepts. Using modern technologies in public spaces, designing a particular route for using mobile phones while walking, establishing urban furniture in the right number, with the right design, and in the right place, designing and implementing 24-hour lighting, supporting the presence of itinerant artists, and properly planning the climate comfort of pedestrians are among the research suggestions. The concept of place has been contrasted with abstract concepts. In this context, intangible heritage and customs are essential aspects of architectural buildings. When designing spaces, it is important to consider the cultural and religious backgrounds of society, as well as the knowledge of the place and the sense of place. The sense of place creates a connection between the habitat and its surroundings, making it a safe point from which social processes can be accepted within a space. The nature of a space accepts social processes in its heart, and the ambiguities of social processes manifest in the appearance of urban spaces.Paying attention to the architectural design of spaces has become more important than just focusing on the ruling social dimensions. Modern business centers are created with the aim of meeting physical needs and providing services on a certain scale. However, designers and managers of these centers should not ignore the psychological dimension of their users. In metropolitan cities, the trend of business-entertainment complexes with beautiful and modern architecture is growing. The Laleh Park commercial center in Tabriz has played an important role in urban development and become a symbol of the city's modernity and progress. It was chosen as a research case to investigate its potential in creating a sense of place from the perspective of its main users. The Laleh Park commercial center boasts a wide range of businesses, from trendy cafes and restaurants to high-end fashion boutiques and electronics stores. Despite its success, the center faces some challenges, including traffic congestion due to an increase in cars and pedestrians in the area. Additionally, some critics argue that the center's focus on consumerism and materialism detracts from the city's cultural heritage and identity. Nevertheless, the Laleh Park commercial center remains an important landmark in Tabriz and a testament to the city's growth and development.During field observations and interviews, 40 people were selected as the statistical population for a focus group. They answered a questionnaire containing 20 questions related to research variables based on a Likert scale. The validity of the variable measurement tool was established through face and content validity, using the experts' point of view. To determine the validity of the prepared tool, the collaboration of 5 university professors was sought. They were asked to comment on the research objectives, evaluate the prepared tool in terms of form and content, and provide corrective comments. The current research strategy is practical, with a mixed method of qualitative-quantitative description based on the method of library studies and phenomenological analysis in the field section. The reliability of the questionnaire was calculated using the Cronbach's alpha formula, with a reliability score of 0.78. The information obtained from the questionnaires was analyzed using SPSS software.According to the research findings, the success of the Laleh Park complex in terms of functionality and modern lifestyle increases people's tendency to attend the place for various activities and recommend it to others, leading to the promotion of social participation in the complex. In this research, the functional spatial components affecting the absorption and continuity of dynamics are referred to as "found", while the semantic components are labeled as "hidden". Livability has a significant effect on the life, growth of cities, and the quality of life of citizens. Despite the high environmental capabilities of many cities in Iran, they face many livability problems, and thus, their solutions are the major priorities. A livability is a suitable place for human life. Semantic and mental aspects of citizens, especially a sense of living place affect livability. Hence, this study assesses the effect of the sense of place on the livability of citizens in Tehran. Tehran, which is currently facing several livability problems, is selected for the study due to the high population and the large displacement of its population. To this end, the questionnaires' assessment, as well as the structural equation modeling (SEM), are used in districts 1,4,5, and 6. These districts were selected as the study samples due to a relatively balanced distribution of socio-economic and cultural strata in Tehran as well as different environmental and physical conditions. The obtained results indicated that the most effective way to improve livability yields the t-statistic in a range of 5.3 to 36.7. Besides, understanding the current situation of the city by the citizens of Tehran includes the social and psychological aspects, where the social aspect has more priority than the psychological one. One of the most important challenges in contemporary cities is the identity crisis that is affected by the lack of sense of place, belonging to the place, and attachment to it. In this regard, new towns have been exposed to a lack of identity more than others due to less residential background. On the other hand, understanding and analyzing the effective factors of the sense of place in new towns have significant effects on solving the existing issues. For this reason, it is a must to study the current situation of new towns. So, this study aims to compare the sense of place among three new towns around Tehran, namely Pardis (phase 1), Parand (phase 2), and Andisheh (phase 3). The method of this qualitative study is descriptive-analytical based on documental studies and surveys. In this study, reviewing the literature shows that sense of place is a subjective concept that is derived from objective aspects. This sense depends on both individuals who percept it and the characteristics and situation of the place.  The data (based on respondents who were residents of case studies by sampling) were analyzed using the TOPSIS technique. The results show that the sense of place in phase 3 in Andisheh new town is more than that in the two others that is because of the higher quality of the physical and spatial environment and also adaptation to standards and principles of urbanism. So, improving the physical and spatial qualities in new towns in particular in the field of various activities (mix land use) that are responding to the daily needs of residents, high quality of infrastructures such as roads, facilities, and equipment, considering to order, harmony and human scale of the space during planning and designing, making the spaces attractive for increasing the presence and high-quality urban furniture can increase a sense of place that leads to identity in these areas. Introduction: The concept of sense of place refers to the emotional connection that an individual has with a physical location. This connection can be influenced by personal experiences and perceptions. As virtual media continues to grow, it impacts the sense of place in physical and virtual spaces.Research Aim: This study aims to analyze the factors that affect the sense of place in public and virtual spaces and provide a theoretical framework for urban planners and cyber activists to promote a stronger sense of place.Methodology: The study utilizes qualitative meta-composition by analyzing selected articles through Sandlowski and Barso's methods. The research focuses on identifying the most important factors affecting the sense of place in real and virtual public spaces. Relevant literature was reviewed through scientific databases and reputable journals, with articles being selected based on their relevance to the research topic. A total of 45 articles were analyzed using qualitative or meta-combined content analysis, following the Critical Assessment Skills Program (CASP) checklist.Studied Areas: The most important public space of the city of Rasht, which is located in its central context, has been selected as a case study. This area has uses of heritage value and hence it is a valuable historical fabric of Rasht city. In addition to having rare aesthetic values and the most important place for the creation and continuation of the collective memories and identity of the city, the mentioned fabric is also known as an important pole of the city's commercial, cultural and recreational activities. Results: The study found that the issue of a sense of place in cyberspace is recognized, and the most important factors affecting the sense of place in public spaces are physical, functional, meaning, art and beauty, environmental, and demographic dimensions. The most important factors in cyberspace are physical and non-physical dimensions. The sense of place in cyberspace has similarities with the indicators in public spaces, and both impact each other. Conclusion: In conclusion, the study suggests that cyberspace creates a unique sense of place and has a significant impact on participation, critique, rationality, and communication. While physical presence is necessary in public spaces, virtual presence has expanded the possibility of experiencing space for the first time. It can increase the sense of place in that real space. Therefore, urban planners and cyber activists need to consider the factors that affect the sense of place in both physical and virtual spaces to promote a stronger emotional connection to place. Keywords for this study include sense of place, sense of cyberspace, public space, cyberspace, and qualitative meta-composition. Manuscript profile

AbstractCreating legible urban environments is one of the most important issues that humans have faced in designing urban environments. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of nodes, paths, edges, etc. in urban streets in relation to induction of readability to the people and to study the strengths and weaknesses of each of these components and to analyze their impact on sense enhancement. Belongs to the place. The hypothesis of this study is that enhancing the quality of readability is an effective and efficient step towards promoting a sense of place. In order to evaluate the efficiency of readability components in urban environments, Kohsar Boulevard of Tehran is studied as an example. In this study, field study and questionnaire analysis were used. After evaluating each of the readability components, the effect of each component on sense of place is determined by regression analysis to identify the indicators of sense of place belonging in Kohsar Boulevard. The results show that among the legibility components, only edge and node variables have a significance level of less than 1% and have a positive effect on enhancing sense of place in Kohsar Boulevard. So the sense of belonging to a place depends on the edge and the knot with a linear equation. Examination of pairwise relation between readability components and sense of place shows that node components (with correlation coefficient;); edge) with correlation coefficient;)% and path) with Pearson correlation coefficient; Face-to-face is directly related. The sign component with a correlation coefficient of 1% has a weak relationship with sense of place. But there is no relationship between the domain variable and the sense of place. In recent decades, extensive studies have been conducted in environmental psychology, which investigates behavior considering human needs in the context of the physical environment and daily life. However, due to the lack of appropriate measure tools to apply the results in architecture, especially about housing, it has not helped much to increase the liveliness and subsequently improve the users of residential buildings' quality of life on a macro scale (society). Therefore, the question of current research is how the mechanism of the impact of architecture quality on the liveliness and improvement of residents' quality of life can be explained and how the results can be applied in practice. Thus, this study has purposefully considered the psychological concept of liveliness as one of the desirable human goals and operationally described it as a qualitative degree of the environment, using a qualitative method of meta-synthesis. Hence, an interdisciplinary systematic comprehension of the optimal design process and its resulting physical factors would be achieved, by using the principles of environmental psychology. It should meet the users' various needs to make the environment meaningful. As a result, creating positive levels of the sense of place affects the persons' feelings and behaviors, affording liveliness and high quality of life in the context of residential spaces as much as possible. In this regard, related physical factors were coded and analyzed in three macro-categories of spatial features, environmental affordances, and environmental attributes formulated in a theoretical model as an architectural strategy to realize liveliness. Moreover, the necessity, solutions, obstacles, and challenges of generalizing the results of the proposed model were discussed. Finally, it should be acknowledged that people's liveliness is significantly related to aspects of the relationship between man and his living physical environment, which can be improved by implementing the principles of environmental psychology in design. Nowadays, the social aspects of cities have become a focus of urban planners. In urban planning, we need to move from a purely physical perspective to a multidimensional one that encompasses all dimensions. On the other hand, the neighborhood is one of the tools of urban planning; in fact, neighborhoods are more social and cultural units than geographical and physical ones. In the present study, considering the importance of social dimensions in urban planning, the factor of diversity of social identities in the city and the threatening factors of social cohesion at the neighborhood level of Mahshahr have been investigated. Accordingly, based on the descriptive-analytical method and field studies, the factor of social cohesion in the Mahshahr neighborhood was examined. Initially, two areas of old and new Mahshahr were selected as two neighborhoods, and then the questionnaire was randomly distributed among the residents of the neighborhood. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software, and using t-test and Pearson, the significant relationship between the components was investigated. The results show that social variables have a stronger relationship with the cohesion factor with a high correlation strength and a decrease in high error, and tribalism is recognized as the most important factor threatening social cohesion in the region.
