Development of a New In-Service Training Package and Its Impact on the Sustainability of Teachers' Critical Thinking

Abstract :
The objective of the present research is to develop a modern in-service training package and assess its impact on the sustainability of teachers' critical thinking. This research is developmental-applied in terms of its purpose and a mixed-method study in terms of its methodology. For the development of the training package, qualitative methods and content analysis with the unit of analysis being words and themes were used. The statistical population of the qualitative part were faculty members, from whom 12 experts were purposefully selected for interviews based on expertise indicators. To examine the effect of the modern in-service training package on the sustainability of teachers' critical thinking, 24 teachers from a school in District 11 were purposefully selected from among the schools in District 11 of Tehran and divided into experimental and control groups (12 in each group). The experimental group received training in six 60-minute sessions. The data obtained from the Ricketts Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (2003) were analyzed using the analysis of covariance method. The qualitative findings of the research showed that 55 meaningful codes were extracted from the qualitative analyses, indicating the factors affecting modern in-service training. The quantitative findings of the research showed that the implementation of the independent variable related to the new in-service training program had an impact on two important components of critical thinking, namely commitment to perfection and creativity.
