Comparative Study of “Hand” Polysemy in Holy Quran and Nahj Al Balaghah by Taking a Look on Cognitive Metaphor Theory

Abstract :

“Polysemy” is one of the semantics branches. This branch surveys and studies the various semantic aspects according to terms’ syntagmatic in a sentence and speech. The term “hand” is a body term which I paid attention by “Lord”. The present paper studies it amongst polysemy words in Holy Quran and Nahj Al Balaghah comparatively. Thus some metaphoric sentences and phrases which imply the mentioned term in Holy Quran and Nahj Al Balaghah are compiled and studied in order to find out various semantic aspects of term “Hand”. Understanding Quran and Nahj Al Balaghah meanings is not possible without understanding and knowing terms’ meanings undoubtedly. Based on such necessity, the present research describes and analyzes the evolution of term “hand” in Quran and Nahj Al Balaghah with descriptive – analytical method. Findings of the research show that the main meaning of “hand” exposed polysemy because of metaphoric and implicit applications.
