        The objective of the present research was to probe the probable relation between translators' gender and transference of aesthetic factors in the translation of rhymed prose. The purpose was achieved through descriptive, comparative, and relational tests and analysis. A translation protocol, consisting of 10 rhymed prose sentences which were translated by 25 female and 25 male BA students of English translation. These students were selected amongst 115 students through the series of processes. Translated rhymed prose sentences were assessed by two raters who were MA student of English translation with Waddington model of translation quality assessment. After analyzing the assessed papers, the researchers came to this conclusion that male participants mainly focused on the diction and form of rhymed prose sentences whereas female ones mainly focused on meaning and grammatical points. So male participants could transfer aesthetic factors better and it revealed that there was a relation between translators' gender and transference of aesthetic factors in the translation of rhymed prose. Among other factors that might manipulate translators’ mind, their Emotional Intelligence level might be an influential element, too. The present research focused on examining the relationship between emotional intelligence and the students’ translation ability. It was carried out among 59 translation students in the Payam-Noor University in Iran, Mazandaran. After homogenizing the sample, the sample size was reduced to 32. The participants were required to translate some paragraphs of the short story 'A rose for Emily' and answer the Bar-On EQ-I questionnaire (1997). The results indicated that there was no relationship between EQ and the learners’ translation ability but some of the main subscales of emotional intelligence (i.e., problem solving, happiness, and flexibility) had statistically weak relationship with the learners’ translation ability.         Abstract This study evaluated the translation quality of English equivalents of Persian proper nouns in the tourist signs and bilingual boards in Isfahan. To find different errors in the translations of the bilingual boards and tourist signs, the data were collected directly by taking picture or writing exactly from the available tourist signs and bilingual boards. Then, the errors were assessed by Multilingual eLearning in Language Engineerin (MeLLANGE) translation error typology, a model for evaluating and marking the errors of a project by Leonardo da Vinci center of education and culture in the University of Paris. The findings revealed that the most frequent errors in Persian-English translation were related to errors of incorrect cases in full upper cases, errors of transferring the content by source language intrusion in the un-translated translatable cases and errors related to the syntax of language. As a conclusion, using expert and knowledgeable translators, applying a consistent method, and employing a comprehensive and standard system can be effective to reduce such errors. تفاصيل المقالة

        This research was a review of the English-to-Persian translation of compound modifiers in press articles from 2014 to 2017 concerning quality assessment according to House's (1977) TQA model. To this end, 150 pieces of news containing the compound modifiers were selected from different newspapers and journals as the source texts, and their equivalent translations were published in local newspapers as the target texts. In the first step, the source text and the target text profiles were provided. Then, the overt and covert errors in translating compound modifiers in the press articles were identified. The findings showed that out of 150 selected compound modifiers, 97 were overt errors, and 53 items had no errors. The overtly erroneous translations had 36 instances of not translated, 23 cases of addition, 14 instances of a slight change in meaning, 13 cases of substitution, and 11 instances of ungrammatically. In terms of covert errors, there was only one error; in the target text, the translator took the author's stance instead of the journalist's. The findings also showed that translations of English compound modifiers of press articles do not undergo cultural filtering. Concerning the House's TQA model, the translation of compound modifiers of the press articles belonged to the covert translation. تفاصيل المقالة

        The present study analyzed the relationship between translators’ creativity and their translation quality. It also aimed at finding the possible connection between the Iranian translators' gender and the quality of their translation. To achieve this end, 40 translation students of both genders were selected from Azad University of Kerman participated in this study. First, the Oxford placement test was administered to achieve a homogeneous sample. Second, Kaufman creativity Scale was distributed to them for exploring the translation students’ creativity. Third, an examination of poem translation was administered to the sample. Having finished their translation, the researcher applied Waddington's (2001) model to assess the quality of translation. Data were descriptively and inferentially presented, and the results were shown in the form of tables and figures. According to the careful analysis, a significant relationship was found between students’ creativity and the quality of their translation; however, no significant association was achieved between Iranian translators’ gender and their translation quality. It is hoped that the present study's findings will open new horizons for translation students and masters, leading to good awareness of the role of individual differences in the process of translation. تفاصيل المقالة

Also, the existence of more than two languages in the brain suggests that multilinguals enhance cognitive control when compared to bilinguals. Accordingly, this study examined the differential roles of bilingualism and trilingualism (multilingualism) on the quality of translation. Participants were 48 BA students of translation. In order to homogenize them in terms of English language proficiency, Oxford Placement Test was administered. The participants were asked to translate 30 sentences from English into Persian. After collecting the participant’s translations, three raters evaluated the quality of their translations. The results revealed that the performance of the trilinguals on the translation was significantly higher than that for the bilinguals. Moreover, the correlation between trilingualism and the quality of translation was higher than the correlation between bilingualism and the quality of translation. تفاصيل المقالة

        The use of machine translation to communicate and access information has become increasingly common. Various translation software and systems appear on the Internet to enable interlingual communication. Accelerating translation and reducing its cost are other factors in the increasing popularity of machine translation. Even if the quality of this type of translation is lower than human translation, it is still significant in many ways. The MQM-DQF model provides standards of error typology for objective and quantitative assessment of translation quality. In this model, two criteria (accuracy and fluency) are used to assess machine translation quality. The MQM-DQF model was used in this study to assess the quality of Google Translate performance in translating English and Persian newspaper texts. Five texts from Persian newspapers and five texts from English newspapers were randomly selected and translated by Google Translate both at the sentence level and the whole text. The translated texts were assessed based on the MQM-DQF model. Translation errors were identified and coded at three severity levels: critical, major, and minor errors. By counting the errors and scoring them, the percentage of accuracy and fluency criteria in each of the translated texts was calculated. The results showed that Google Translate performs better in translating texts from Persian into English; furthermore, in sentence-level translation, it performs better than the translation of the whole text. Moreover, translations of different newspaper texts (economic, cultural, sports, political, and scientific) were not of the same quality. تفاصيل المقالة

        This paper aims to assess the quality of Daneshvar’s short story (‘Chashme-e-Nim Khofteh’) with its English translation (‘The Half-Closed Eye’) by Lewis (1997) in light of House’s revised model (1997; 2001). Firstly, the main literature on the House’s TQA is reviewed. House’s newly modern revision concerns the categories for register analysis, the distinction between overt and covert translation including the cultural filter, as well as a reconsideration of the whole notion of translation evaluation. Secondly, the quality of Daneshvar’s translated story is assessed concerning its English translation. In doing so, a text profile is given for the ST and the TT, and then, the functions of both the ST and the TT are stated. Third and finally, the overall quality of the English translation of the story is assessed. Regarding the target field, a lot of mismatches in three lexical, syntactic, and textual means were observed. Regarding tenor, the changes the translator has made in the syntactic and textual means have changed the informal/ casual style of the ST into a bit of a formal/ informal one.         This study focused on the role of appropriate equivalence selection of colors in the field of Advanced Pranic Healing (APH), based on Mona Baker’s equivalence, both at word level and above word level. The participants included 40 bachelor’s students studying in the field of English translation. Participants received the Colors’ Translation Test (CTT) included in the book “Advanced Pranic Healing” written by Choa Kuk Sui. The translated colors from English into Persian were then used in the treatment process of ten patients. Inaccurate translation of colors had negative consequences in patients. The findings also showed that equivalence above word level could be more problematic than the word level. The destructive consequences of inaccurate translation of colors in the field of APH, encourages translators to gain background knowledge of the field they are trying to translate. This study also supported therapy implications of color translation and teachers, translators and pranic healers may benefit from the findings of the study تفاصيل المقالة

        The present study aimed at investigating the impact of a genre-specific strategy-based instructional inter- vention on translation quality, dominant translation and writing activities in the persuasive essays of a group of EFL learners within the perspective of activity theory. The main purpose of the study was to see, taking translation as a sort of writing in its own right, whether the kind of instructional intervention im- plemented influence the writing and translation activities of learners similarly or not. To this end, 22 in- termediate EFL learners received 10 sessions of self-regulatory strategy development (SRSD) instruction accompanied by some translation exercises on persuasive writing. Based on the results, SRSD did not have any significant effect on the translation quality of the students. However, the comparison of pretest and posttest scores on the persuasive probe and translation test revealed that the genre-specific strategy instruction influenced the dominant translation and writing activities of the participants. The findings pointed to the fact that the issues related to the students' new learning histories changed the nature of their activity systems both in persuasive essay writing and translation. تفاصيل المقالة

        Translation evaluation is an activity of vital concern in the context of translator education. However, it is one that is, despite being a common practice, under-researched and under-discussed. The leading purposes were to determine the dominant methods for translation evaluation of undergraduate students in the final tests of translation courses at Iranian universities and to identify its major characteristics. To meet the objectives, in a 30-minute semi-structured interview, 10 experienced university translation instructors responded to 10 questions on how they develop their translation tests, how they guarantee the quality of their tests, and most importantly, how they evaluate and score their students’ performance. The results confirmed that the dominant method which is commonly and currently practiced is the purely essay-type format except at Payam-e-Noor University where multiple-choice items are always present as well. The findings also showed how much discrepancy exists among the Iranian translation teachers (as developers of final translation tests), who are least informed about the current translation evaluation methods. It was also revealed that the criteria they use for developing such tests and scoring student translations are not theory-driven but are highly subjective, mainly based on their personal experience and intuition. To accomplish this research, House‟s model of TQA was chosen as the framework for the investigation of “The Graveyard” by Gaiman and its Persian translation by ObeydiAshtiani. The aforementioned model involved qualitative aspects which fo- cus on lexical, syntactic and textual means under the main categories of field, tenor and mode.         Considering the statement that errors can affect the quality of translations, the need to adopt an objective model to analyze these errors has been one of the most debated issues in translation quality assessment. In recent decades, some objective models have emerged with an error analysis nature according to which evaluators can make decisions on the quality of translations. In this study, Method (A) of Waddington's model (2001) was applied on the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (1937) and translated by Parviz Daryuosh in 1966. To this end, 20 paragraphs were chosen at random, then compared and contrasted thoroughly with their translations to evaluate the quality of translation. By close examination of the data, the kinds of errors were detected and tabulated according to the number of frequency and percentage. The results of the study revealed that almost all extents of Waddington's model (method A) could be applied on the novel. Furthermore, the values of the statistical analysis showed that out of the total of 270 errors, the most frequent errors went to the first category of the model with 232 errors accounted for 85.92%, and affected comprehension in the source text. The most frequent errors related to this category were fauxsens, omission, addition and loss of meaning and the rest of errors were not significant. In contrast, the least dominant errors were related to the second category with 38 errors accounted for 14.07%, and affected the expression of the target text.         The present research studied two translations of Hafez’s Ghazaliyat: one in prose by John Slater, Jeffrey Einboden, and the other in rhymed prose by Manavaz Alexandrian. House’s Translation Quality Assessment model concerning overt and covert errors was adapted in this assessment. In this regard, the commonly translated poetry of two translators (14 poems) was compared. To prepare the overt errors tables, each verse was initially understood through the interpretation of the book Sharh-e Shoq by Hamidian (2011) and then compared with the two translations to detect the errors. The study also extracted the covert errors by deeply analyzing both profiles of the source and target texts. The findings revealed that the two translations were not very different in terms of quality. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of Persian translation of the14th edition of the original English book “Principles of Marketing” written by Philip Kotler and Gary Armstrong based on House (TQA) model: overt and covert translation distinction. The book was translated by Dr. Ab- bas Saleh Ardestani and Dr. Mohammad Reza Saadi. The result of this comparison was dimensional mis- matches categorized based on the different dimensions of register including field, tenor, and mode, overt and covert errors. As a result, the translators of Persian translation did not carry out the criteria completely to have an overt translation according to House's view stated that scientific textbooks should be translated overtly, instead they tended to translate the text covertly. All mismatches on different levels of register also showed that the cultural filter was applied in translation. The findings and outcomes could contribute to the knowledge around the fields of Marketing, Business Management, and Translation Studies. The qual- ity was assessed at sentence-level and page-level by the researchers and from the viewpoint of a tour- ism management student. In Phase 1, the quality of one randomly selected sentence from each text- book was assessed applying Hurtado Albir‘s analytical model; two were acceptable and 30 unaccept- able. The dominant error types according to her model were also identified. In Phase 2, the quality of one randomly selected page from each textbook was assessed applying Waddington‘s Method C, which is a holistic model; on average, the quality proved to be inadequate. In phase 3, the opinion of one end-user regarding the overall quality of the translation of six sentences and six pages from the whole corpus was elicited. To her, the overall quality was adequate at the sentence-level and inade- quate at the page-level. The researchers employed House’s Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) model to evaluate the differences between the two translated works. Accordingly, they had the Persian texts translated by a human translator and Google Machine Translator (GMT). The translation quality, error recognition, and mismatches of the two translations were subsequently analyzed. The results showed a one-to-one match between the source and target texts regarding the human translator’s work. Furthermore, the results revealed both overt and covert errors when comparing the human and machine translators. The error analysis results also suggested that the quality of the output provided by the GMT can cause misunderstanding in the meaning. Academic texts could mean different in various contexts.         This study aimed to evaluate the translation quality of metaphors in Khayyam’s poetry using House’s model and to identify the extent to which the source text (ST) and the target text (TT) use common conceptual metaphors. To this end, 37 metaphors were chosen out of ten quatrains based on purposive sampling. Then, the ST profile was compared to the TT profile and the metaphors were descriptively analyzed and the errors were identified. The results indicated that there were both covert and overt errors in the translation of Omar Khayyam’s quatrains by Fitzgerald. The covert errors were across the dimensions of field, mode, and tenor while the overt errors were due to the mismatches in the denotative meanings of the ST and the TT with substitution and omission being the largest group of overt errors. Moreover, the analysis of the conceptual metaphors between the two texts revealed that there were some shared conceptual metaphors between the ST and the TT. These common conceptual metaphors indicate that both speakers of Persian and English conceptualize reality in the same way despite their belonging to different cultures. تفاصيل المقالة

        In this two-stage empirical research, the authors attempted to study the impact of promoting translation sub-competences defined by PACTE's Multi-Componential Model for Translation Competence on the promotion of total translation competence as the first stage. The experiment for this purpose was conducted on a group of Iranian undergraduate students comprising of their exposure to a targeted syllabus for one semester. A pre-test and post-test of the experiment assessed their level and progress regarding translation competence, using Orozco's measuring instruments and Farahzad and Famil Khalili's TQA scale. The first stage also investigated whether Orozco’s model could assess sub-competences separately. The second stage investigated whether translation sub-competences played equal roles within the translation competence, in order to establish a ranking of influence among them. Thus, the study contrasted the instrumental results of the tests to the total scores through the TQA scale and calculated the correlation between them. The analyses revealed that the growth in each translation sub-competence promoted the total translation competence. However, the study found Orozco’s model unable to assess translation sub-competences separately. Finally, the study found that Orozco's measuring instruments and Farahzad and Famil Khalili's TQA scale employed for this experiment were unable to collect sufficient evidential data as to measure the separate role or influence of each sub-competence in the construction of total translation competence. تفاصيل المقالة

        This study investigated the effect of self-assessment and peer-assessment on the quality of students’ transla- tion. Participants of the study were 60 male and female students. They were selected from the senior stu- dents studying English Translation and divided into two groups: self-assessment and peer-assessment. The study adopted a pretest-posttest design, and students’ translation quality was measured before and after providing them with instructional treatment through self-assessment and peer-assessment using a translation quality checklist. Data were gathered during the pretest and posttest phases and analyzed using independent and paired samples t-tests. The results of the study indicated that both self-assessment and peer-assessment were effective in improving the quality of the translation of the students. The comparison of the posttest mean scores also revealed that peer-assessment was significantly more effective than self-assessment in promoting the participants' quality of translation. تفاصيل المقالة

        The current study presents findings from a mixed-methods study of investigating the self-regulatory role of private speech (self-talk) on students’ translation quality. The aim of the study was to validate the adapted version of a self-verbalization questionnaire. The construct validity and reliability of the scale were supported by the CFA which revealed that all items reached the acceptable fit thresholds and had high reliability. The study utilized two phases of analysis. In the quantitative analysis, 151 undergraduate English translation students participated in this study. Two questionnaires including validated self-verbalization scale and self-regulation accompanying a text were distributed among the students to determine the influence of the self-regulatory role of private speech on translation quality. The results demonstrated that the students who used more private speech had a better translation quality that shows the self-guidance role of private speech. In the qualitative phase of the study, 21 English translation students attended an interview. The focus of the interview was on the potential functions of the self-regulatory role of private speech in translation. The results indicated that most students apply private speech as a facilitator of the difficult task. Retention and evaluation were also among the most often applied strategies by the students. تفاصيل المقالة
