This study was planned to investigate the effect of explicit teaching of some Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) techniques on Iranian EFL learners' Reading Comprehension. It was attempted to explore any change in the students’ abilities in revealing the implied meaning of the texts. Any change in the students’ views toward learning English was also explored in this study after critical reading instruction through CDA techniques. To this end, two news articles were selected from online sources. The participants were 60 undergraduate students of Law at Bandar Anzali Azad University. They were assigned to two groups of 30 students. The experimental group were required to hand in a reflective essay on each reading article. They also responded to a questionnaire to reveal any change in their attitudes toward English language learning or any increase in their motivation to learn it. The results revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group after being instructed to read between lines through CDA. Their motivation also increased in learning English after becoming familiar with the field of CDA. پرونده مقاله

This study explored how political elites can contribute to power enactment through using language. It started with a theoretical overview of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), and then presented a corpus consisting of speeches of eight political elites, namely, Malcolm X, Noam Chomsky, Martin Luther King, Josef Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Winston Churchill, J.F. Kennedy and Adolph Hitler. This study analyzed speeches in terms of figures of' speech, and interpreted them from the point of view of CDA using the framework introduced by Fairclough (1989) as a three-dimensional approach to the study of discourse (Description, Interpretation, Explanation) and van Dijk (2004) as the theory of critical context analysis.. Speech figures are classified in this study into six main categories as Comparison, Grammar, Meaning, Parenthesis, Repetition and Rhetoric. The result of analyses reveals that while there are differences in the type and degree of speech figures employed by our selected individual political elites, there is one striking pattern which is common among all speeches: the frequent use of figures of Grammar, Repetition and Rhetoric پرونده مقاله

The present study was an evaluation attempt to investigate the practicality of interpretation procedures proposed by Fairclough (1989) in the critical analysis of Persian texts. The evaluation was implemented on the basis of a goodness criterion, analytical induction (AI) framework developed by Silverman (1993). In so doing, we went about the interpretation of the inaugural speech made by the president of Iran, Dr. Rohani to the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2013. The interpretation was done according to the Fairclough’s interpretation model in light of AI theoretical framework. The outcome of the study supported the practicality of the overall interpretation model in the Iranian context. However, considering Iranian special sociolinguistic context, the study also put forward some suggestions with respect to the interpretation of local coherence and text structure in the lower section of the model as well as situational context and intertextual context in upper section. پرونده مقاله

This study aimed at finding about the extent to which ideological tendencies would influence the news writers’ strategies in providing the finished product. It also attempted to uncover the underlying ideological assumptions hidden in the source text and the target text. For this purpose, the controversial issue of Iran’s nuclear program was selected and the data was extracted from Tehran Declaration and the Iranian president’s speech together with their renditions in Western English newspapers. Then, the syntactic and semantic features of the original text were set against those of the English renditions based on Hodge and Kress’s framework (1996). The Chisquare test was used to determine whether there were any significant ideological differences. The results revealed significant differences in terms of ideological tendencies. پرونده مقاله

This study aimed to examine the role of figurative language in shaping political texts based on the modern framework suggested by Kövecses. The research corpus comprised thirty thousand words selected as a text sample to see the source of the conceptual domain used. It was prepared through a systematic random sampling of various editorial articles in Western political journals on the relationship between Iran and the West in the period 2010-2019. Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) was used to specify patterns in political articles, usually providing support for previous research by authority figures in critical and political metaphor analysis that metaphors are used to shape political thought, aid political persuasion, and in directing circumstances and cognitive models to form the interpretation of the nation as a person or body metaphor. Finally, the study provides substantial support for the textual findings of conceptual metaphors used. The findings of the study provide EFL classrooms with a number of implications for future research. پرونده مقاله

The present Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) study aimed to explore the probable ideological manipu- lations exerted in three translations of an English political book entitled The Coup by Ervand Abraha- mian. This comparative qualitative study was conducted based on Farahzad‘s three-dimensional CDA model. The textual, paratextual, and semiotic aspects were critically scrutinized in the text of the three translations (TT1, TT2, and TT3). The findings revealed that TT1 utilized more kinds of manipulations (lexical choices, nominalization, and paratextual level) and less foreignization compared to the other two translations. Considering the amount of lexical choices, addition, and foreignization, TT3 was ranked the second; at the semiotic level, the third translator exercised greater manipulations in comparison to the first one. For TT2, however, only in terms of deletion, passivization, and covering page significant changes could be spotted. TT2‘s stance was apparently similar to that of the original author through adopting more neutral vocabulary items, passive structures, and a less neutral cover picture. As the findings of the present study illustrated, translators can achieve certain ideological goals by employing a myriad of dis- cursive strategies and structures. The findings are discussed in light of the implications of multimodal analysis of multiple translations for political translation theory and practice. پرونده مقاله

Abstract Critical Discourse Analysis as an interdisciplinary approach aims at making transparent the connections between discourse practices and social practices and provides ways of looking into translations from a critical standpoint.Farahzad is among the scholars who presented her specific CDA model inspired by Fairclough’s approach. The present Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)-based study aimed to explore the probable ideological manipulations exerted in the three translations of a single English political book called "Media Control" by "Noam Chomsky." This comparative qualitative study was conducted based on Farahzad’s (2011) three-dimensional CDA model. The textual, paratextual, and semiotic as-pects were critically scrutinized. At textual level, it was revealed that different manipulative strategies, mostly addition, deletion, and deliberate lexical selection were applied by the translators to incorporate their own ideologiesand stances. At paratextual level, the existence of extended footnoteswasobserved , and at semiotic level, the book covers’ designs and colour combinations which were the indicators of the translators’ lines of thoughts and ideologies were analyzed. پرونده مقاله

Translation plays an important role in conveying and manipulating ideologies. Accordingly, this study sought to analyze the ideological elements in the English subtitles of the Persian movie The Salesman. The framework to find the driven ideological strategies in the translation of the Persian audio of the same movie was based on the critical discourse analysis (CDA) model inspired by Fairclough and proposed by Farahzad. Following the data analysis, the researchers found that the most frequently applied ideological manipulation strategies were related to social power relationship. Next came ideologically significant lexical choices fol- lowed by agency. The fourth most frequently applied ideological manipulation strategies were traces of both modality and nominalization while the least frequent strategies were tense, positive/negative, and coordina- tion/subordination. Furthermore, no samples of passivization/activization as means of ideological manipula- tion were found. Moreover, the translator had used frequent strategies such as deletion and addition, which were not included in the very same model. Ultimately, the study revealed that ideological manipulation oc- curred mostly in subjects concerning the rights of women in society, the patriarchal system of Iran, religious expression in daily conversation, as well as Iranian norms and their religious culture. The findings further proved the significance of ideology and power relations in the text and the ubiquitous need to be aware of the means of representing ideology in texts and thus how to analyze texts ideologically. پرونده مقاله

The impact of translated movies has already been emphasized by quiet a number of researchers. The present study aimed to investigate the strategies of the Iranian subtitlers and dubbers of English movies in rendering English words. To this aim, three theoretical frameworks were employed: The researchers first used the strategies proposed by Venuti (2012) and Newmark's (1991) classification and they then employed Van Dijk’s (1999) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model in part dominance. The aim was to find which strategies were the most prevalently used by Iranian subtitlers and dubbers and to see which model fitted these attempts the best. The movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was chosen for this study. Through a qualitative content analysis, the distribution of strategies was found and reported in frequencies and percentages and were cross-compared between the three frameworks. The result showed which strategies of each model were used more. The findings of this study may pave the way for future research in literary translation and help translation instructors and translation trainees as well in translation classes. پرونده مقاله
