Perception of General Pragmatic Characteristics of Online Sarcasm among Iranian EFL/ESL Learners and English Native Speakers

This study sought to identify the general pragmatic characteristic of sarcasm that English native speakers and Iranian EFL/ESL learners draw on in the recognition of online sarcasm. In so doing, a Likert scale questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data for subsequent analysis; also, qualitative thematic analysis was done on the data collected through a semi-structured interview. The participants consisted of three groups of EFL and ESL learners as well as native English speakers (each consisting of 9 members) who were selected through snowball sampling at BA or MA degrees. The findings indicated that the total frequency uses of pragmatic characteristics were significantly different among the three groups. Moreover, the results revealed that, among other pragmatic characteristics, Victim, Insincerity, Antecedent, and Negative Attitude, have a more statistically significant contribution to the recognition of online sarcasm. The study bears implications for policymakers, curriculum planners, material developers, EFL/ESL teachers, and researchers.
پژوهش حاضر به دنبال شناسایی ویژگی های کلی منظورشناسی کنش گفتاری کنایه است که انگلیسی زبانان بومی و زبان آموزان ایرانی زبان انگلیسی به عنوان زبان دوم/خارجه در تشخیص کنایه در محیط برخط از آن استفاده میکنند. برای انجام این کار، از پرسشنامه ای با مقیاس لیکرت برای جمع آوری داده های کمی برای تجزیه و تحلیل بعدی استفاده شد. همچنین تحلیل موضوعی کیفی بر روی داده های جمع آوری شده از طریق مصاحبه نیمه ساختاریافته برای تکمیل داده ها انجام شد. شرکت کنندگان از سه گروه از زبان آموزان ایرانی زبان انگلیسی به عنوان زبان دوم، زبان آموزان ایرانی زبان انگلیسی به عنوان زبان خارجه، و همچنین انگلیسی زبانان بومی (هر کدام شامل 9 عضو) بودند که از طریق نمونه گیری منتخب در مقاطع کارشناسی یا کارشناسی ارشد انتخاب شدند. یافتهها نشان داد که فراوانی کل استفاده از ویژگیهای منظورشناسی در بین سه گروه تفاوت معنیداری دارد. علاوه بر این، نتایج نشان داد که در میان سایر ویژگیهای منظورشناسی،ویژگی قربانی، عدم صداقت، سابقه و نگرش منفی، سهم آماری معنیداری در تشخیص کنایه در محیط برخط دارند. این مطالعه کاربردهایی برای سیاست گذاران، برنامه ریزان برنامه درسی، توسعه دهندگان مطالب، معلمان و محققان آموزش زبان انگلیسی دارد.
