        Idioms are the fixed expressions whose meanings cannot be understood from the personal sense of the words that constitute them. When idioms are used in literary texts such as novels, the difficulty of rendering them may get even more severe. This study tries to determine the most frequent strategies used in Persian rendering of English idioms in “The Old Man and the Sea” novel. In addition, choosing the initial norm translation of Toury is the second goal of the present study. For this purpose, three Persian translations of the novel were selected by three Persian translators named Mohammadtaghi Faramarzi, Nazi Azima, and Najaf Daryabandari. Several 60 idioms were extracted from the book, and their Persian translations also were categorized. The results showed that the most translation strategies used by Mohammadtaghi Faramarzi are translation by “paraphrase using a related word”. Related to norm translation, Mohammadtaghi Faramarzi used acceptability more than adequacy norm. Translation by “paraphrase using a related word” was also used mainly by Nazi Azima. Acceptability norm is the most frequent norm used by Nazi Azima. Finally, translation by “paraphrase using unrelated words” is the most strategy used by Najaf Daryabandari.         In the past time, ethics in translation was more concerned with translators’ commitment to fidelity. Today it is no longer merely concerned with fidelity, but rather with a commitment to the cultural, social, situational norms of a given community. Not being committed to such ethical norms or accepting the responsibility for their act could create irrecoverable problems for the profession; for instance, the clients’ gradual loss of trust in this profession and the emergence of non-professional translators. The present study surveyed the extent of the commitment of the Iranian professional translators to ethics and professional norms. A quantitative analysis was designed based on a researcher-made questionnaire rooted in Chesterman’s models of ethics, followed by a qualitative phase through the design of interviews. The questionnaire was administered to 45 selected Iranian professional translators working in a variety of fields. The results obtained from the questionnaires and interviews indicated that Iranian professional translators, though suffering from a lack of a comprehensive code of ethics compatible with the international standards, are highly committed to ethics in their profession and that those who are more committed to ethics in their translation also feel and express more social responsibility. The findings of this study can ensure the clients of the professional translators’ commitment to their social responsibility, hence the quality and fidelity of their translation. Manuscript profile

        The present study explored localization of computer games in Persian translation versions. Also, it investigated the applied strategies by Iranian translators in localization of computer games. Also, it found the shortcomings of the translation regarding localization. The corpus was composed of five computer games. The data of this project were collected and evaluated based on Tomaszkiewicz's (1993) model. After that, all the data were collected by the researcher and processed through SPSS software. This study indicated that there was a very significant difference between the frequencies of the applied strategies. That is to say, the most frequently used strategy was "literal translation", while the least frequent ones identified as "omission" and "borrowing". However, "Replacement of the cultural term with deictic" avoided in transactions of the games since it cannot make a natural and acceptable translation. Manuscript profile

        This study aimed to examine the status of multiculturalism in the English curriculum in Iran from the viewpoint of high school teachers and students. To this aim, a quantitative survey method was used. The participants recruited for this study consisted of two groups. The first group included 250 high school students who were selected through convenience sampling from a representative sample of high schools in Fars Province in Iran. The second group consisted of 150 EFL teachers with a background in translation studies who were selected through convenience sampling. They were selected from the EFL teachers at high schools in Fars Province in Iran. There were two instruments used in this study. The first instrument involved a questionnaire with 20 5-Point-Likert items, which was developed for eliciting the students’ perspectives about the application of multicultural education in teaching English to Iranian high school students. The second instrument consisted of 40 -point- Likert items, which was developed for measuring the teachers’ perspectives about the application of multicultural education in teaching English to Iranian high school students. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and one-sample t-tests. The results of data analysis showed that multicultural education is not appropriately applied in English curriculum of Iranian high schools. Teachers may need more information and training regarding the positive effects of a multicultural education on all learners. Thus, multicultural education should be implemented in the ELT curriculum, introducing students to an excellent and challenging range of world literature. Manuscript profile

        This study investigated the effect of purposeful assessment scenarios, Assessment for Learning (AFL), Assessment as Learning (AAL), and integrated purposeful assessment scenarios on Iranian EFL learners’ development of listening comprehension. To this end, 100 learners organized in three experimental and one control group participated in this quasi-experimental study. They received listening instructions of the mentioned purposeful assessment forms. Parametric statistical analysis in the form of some one-way ANOVAs revealed thatEFL learners exposed to integrated assessment could significantly develop their listening comprehension better than the AFL- and AAL-oriented instruction groups. However, no significant difference between AAL- and AFL-oriented groups’ listening comprehension was obtained. Though the findings are not in favor of any of the individual scenarios, they lend support to their feasibility in classroom performance assessment and assert the usefulness and viability of the synthetic approach to assessment through which measurement and instruction are bifurcated.         This mixed-method study investigated the various competencies English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers require by examining a model. To fulfill the study objectives, the grounded theory was adopted in the qualitative phase to explore EFL key informants' articulations and concerns about the issue; therefore, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 Iranian EFL teachers recruited by purposeful sampling. In the quantitative phase, a researcher-made 103 item questionnaire was extracted based on the interview codes. After being piloted, it was administrated to 382 Iranian EFL teachers to validate the results obtained in the qualitative phase and investigate Iranian EFL teachers' professional competency and their preferences about its dimensions. Three dimensions were discovered in the qualitative phase, which was not favourable among EFL teachers in the quantitative phase. Meanwhile, factor analysis about the EFL teachers' dimensions yielded three factors according to priority: a) attitudinal competency, b) management competency, and c) language competency. The researchers concluded that attitudinal competency is regarded as the most highly valued of the three dimensions by Iranian EFL teachers. Language competency is regarded as the least priority, which justifies the fact that despite showing eagerness and enthusiasm to teach, these teachers do not possess enough linguistic competency and do not tend to develop it. Accordingly, the researchers suggested some practices for developing EFL teachers' professional competency, emphasizing that all dimensions are essential and EFL teachers should have a balanced combination of them.         This research study aimed to develop a mobile app to enhance exceptional students’ English vocabulary learning and to evaluate the Exceptional Student Learning English (ESLE) app, mainly from exceptional students’ perspectives and different experts’ perspectives. The ESLE app, an interactive mobile game, was developed using multiplatform and the digital game-based learning instructional design model. In the first stage of the study, 40 exceptional students with intellectual and physical disabilities were selected and assigned non-randomly to an experimental and a control group (20 in each group); they were all grade 7th to 9th junior high school students. The experimental group received vocabulary instruction through the ELSE app, and the control group was taught conventionally. The groups were compared both before and after the treatment. The app was then analyzed according to the analytical framework of Hubbard (2011). To this end, 12 English teachers and computer experts were selected purposefully. Open-ended questionnaires were sent to 12 participants to collect the experts’ feedback on the developed app. The study results showed that all exceptional students improved their vocabulary skills after engaging with the game-based app. The experts’ feedbacks showed their positive attitudes towards using the ESLE app for exceptional students’ English vocabulary learning. Findings have illuminative implications for many EFL teachers in applying an effective method in teaching new words to exceptional EFL learners. The study also offers implications for EFL material developers and application designers. Manuscript profile

        The present research compared two different modes for IELTS academic module administration among Iranian IELTS candidates: the paper mode and the computer mode in writing tasks one & two in terms of overall band score. Additionally, it examined whether computer familiarity had any significant effect on the IELTS overall band score of Iranian EFL candidates. To this end, 88 IELTS candidates from three different language institutes in Iran were randomly selected. Hence, based on the OPT results, 50 IELTS candidates were recruited and then divided into two equal groups, i.e. paper mode group and computer mode group randomly. Moreover, a computer familiarity questionnaire was also administered. The study’s findings revealed that the participants in the computer-based mode had a better overall band score than the participants in the paper-based mode on both writing Tasks. Additionally, the results showed that computer familiarity could result in computer mode outperformance in both tasks of IELTS academic writing tasks. These findings have some pedagogical implications, the most important of which is the influence of computer mode administration of IELTS and computer familiarity on candidates’ scores.         The influence of the Igbo indigenous culture is of structural significance to the work of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, an African female novelist from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria. The present article studies the effects and reflections of the Igbo oral heritage in the language and narrative structure of Adichie’s novel, Half of a Yellow Sun as a significant cultural phenomenon at the hand of the Igbo female novelist to create a discourse of counter-identification with that of the colonial and/or patriarchal discourse. As Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak argues, ‘the epistemic violence’ of colonialism has long silenced the voices of the subaltern women. Her postcolonial feminist theory of the cultural difference, which calls for a self-conscious un-learning of the Eurocentric theories and focusing on the cultural specificities of the Third World women, serves as the backbone of the present study. The textual strategies of recursion and revision, as defined by Karla F.C. Holloway, are employed in this novel to re-read the palimpsest of the non-recognized history of the subaltern African woman. This novel provides a space where these silenced voices can be heard throughout using the strategies mentioned above. Adichie emphasizes the indigenous Igbo cultural factors informing the self-image and development of the identity of the subaltern woman in post-independent Nigeria under violent militarism, civil war, and ethnic fanaticism. The study of the novel reveals the significant influence of the Igbo oral heritage not only in the language but also in the narrative structure of the novel. Manuscript profile

        This content analysis study aimed to investigate whether communicative strategies (CSs) have been incorporated into Iranian high school English textbooks (Vision Series). To this aim, the strategic components highlighted in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) principles were selected to uncover its role in such textbooks. Moreover, Dornyei’s communication strategy classification was used to scrutinize the extent to which the strategic competence was represented in high school EFL textbooks. The analysis of the results revealed that the textbook did not benefit from different kinds of CSs. The authors’ claims were not met in the large portion of the textbook’s content. Therefore, Vision series need to be modified so that CSs are more appropriately included. The central philosophy of incorporating explicit CSs into the Vision series was not to accomplish as many CSs as possible, but rather to draw the students’ attention to special CSs, which could help them overcome the barriers faced in language communication.         The purpose of this study was to show how expert and novice writers take position and stance in Research Article and Master of Art theses Introductions, so Engagement resources were investigated in 30 Research Articles and 30 Master of Art theses written by non-native Iranian speakers. Through paired samples t-test analysis, we found out that the mean occurrences of heteroglossia items in both RA and Master thesis Introductions were larger than those of monoglots items, indicating the awareness of both groups of writers to ‘engage’ alternative positions in Introduction sections. The results also revealed that wide choices were preferred over contractive options in both corpora, implying both groups of writers’ respects to alternative voices cautiously by welcoming rather than closing down the possibility of different perspectives and stances. Furthermore, unlike novice academic writers who used more Attribute features than Entertainment ones in their MATs introduction sections, expert academic writers employed a balanced number of Entertainment and Attributed in their RA introduction sections. The balanced deployment of Entertain and Attribute features in RA Introductions by expert writers might be characteristics of the writers’ demonstration of politeness, which is commonly accepted as an essential feature in academic writing discourse. Finally, through qualitative analysis, it was demonstrated that MAT writers as novice academic writers suffered from lacking appropriate evaluative stance and authorial voice towards propositions Manuscript profile
