The economic discourse of the Eighth Government and its relation to state intervention

Abstract :

The discourse of the eighth government (2001-2005) in economic area, is based on a small government with the least intervention in economy. This is the result which is obtained in this study based on discourse analysis and applying Van Dijk method, through analyzing speeches and documentation of head of government and ministers of “Cooperatives”, “Economic Affairs and Finance” and “Labor and Social Affairs”. In fact, in this study for the first time, to understand the economic discourse of the eighth government, in addition to the head of the eighth government’s speech, discourse analysis of the economic ministers has also been considered in this period.

Discourse analysis indicated that the dominant economic approach of these individuals was based on liberalism and only one minister (Minister of Cooperatives) strongly disagreed with such an economic approach.

The research shows that in the investigated period in which the reformist hold the government, the discourse of the head of government and economic authorities is entirely based on the support of the free market system and widening of the private sector, and there is an attempt to move towards a small government, and also in this discourse, there is a distinct boundary between economic and politic, in the sense that economic problems are less tied to political issues.
