Assessing the Effects of Revitalizing the Historic Urban Fabric towards Sustainable Development (Case of Study: Restoration and Conversion of the Historic House of Ala-od-Dowleh into a Park in Tehran)

Abstract :
Objective: Given that according to the existing plan, the house of Ala-ud-Dawlah (the ruler of Tehran during the Qajar era), a historic and dilapidated house in the center of Tehran, is to be restored and turned into a park, this study examines the impacts of this project.
Methods: In the qualitative part, documentary study and field research have been used, and in the quantitative part, a survey has been used. In the qualitative part, the statistical population includes managers and experts of the Municipality of District 12 of Tehran in related fields, resident and non-resident citizens, and local businessmen of Ferdowsi neighborhood, 21 people were interviewed until theoretical saturation.
Findings: Preserving cultural heritage and renewing the identity of the area and its surroundings, reviving the historical context, creating and strengthening friendly communities, increasing the possibility of spending leisure time, beautifying the area (improving the urban landscape, improving visual visibility), and correcting the undesirable appearance of the area, attracting tourists, and increasing traffic are the most important effects mentioned.
Conclusion: Owning the spaces around the house, carrying out fundamental renovations, organizing the worn and unsightly surrounding space, increasing leisure and welfare facilities, increasing the utility of the renovated space, and holding social and cultural programs with the participation of citizens can help sustain the restoration and revitalization activities, preserve historical identity, strengthen collective memories of the past, and create new memories.
