The Role of the Spiritual Teachings of Ahl al-Bayt (AS) in Enhancing Family Resilience in the Face of Social Crises: A Comparative Study with Family Psychology Theories

Abstract :

Emerging social crises, such as the disintegration of family identity, the proliferation of cyber-related harms, and the weakening of the semantic system of modern lifestyles, have intensified the need to reconsider the epistemological foundations and functional dimensions of family resilience. The present study aims to analyze the role of the spiritual teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) in enhancing family resilience in the face of social crises and to compare these teachings with family psychology theories. Utilizing a qualitative methodology and employing thematic analysis techniques, this research conducts a comparative examination of resilience components within the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (p.b.u.t) and contemporary theories of family psychology. Through a systematic review of Hadith sources and specialized literature in family psychology, the study identifies both shared and distinctive components of these two approaches. The findings indicate that while the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (p.b.u.t) share common elements with psychological theories—such as attributing meaning to crises, strengthening family communication, and utilizing support resources—they offer unique and profound capacities in dimensions like sacralizing resilience, perceiving suffering as an opportunity for spiritual elevation, and emphasizing moral virtues as the core of the resilience process. Accordingly, this study proposes an indigenous Islamic model of family resilience, paving the way for advancing interdisciplinary theorization in Islamic family studies and contextualizing psychological frameworks within religious societies.
