Effectiveness of training family empowerment program in reducing domestic violence against women and children

Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of training the program of family empowerment on reducing domestic violence against the women and children. design quasi-experimental with pre-test, post-test, and two-month follow-up with control group was used. The statistical population included 100 families with experiencing domestic violence referred to the Salaheddin Counseling Center of Sanandaj. Through available sampling method, 30 families were selected based on the inclusion criteria, and were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. Violence against Women Survey Questionnaire Mohseni Tabrizi, Kaldi, Javadianzadeh, 2013) and Childhood Exposure to Domestic Violence Scale (Edleson, Shin, & Armendariz, 2008) were used to collect data. For the experimental group, an empowerment training program was conducted according to the researcher-made protocol in 16 sessions of 2-hour duration each held twic a week. Then, the data were analyzed by covariance. Results showed that training the program of family empowerment reduced violence against the women and children (P<0/01). The effect was sustained during the follow-up period. Training the program of family empowerment in facing life problems, familiarizing them with the causes of domestic violence and teaching them to choose alternative behaviors can be effective in preventing or reducing the domestic violence
