Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to identify EFL learners' attitudes towards learning English, English language and culture at Islamic Azad Universities of Zone four. Other factors such as gender and field of study that may affect learners' attitudes were also considered. To achieve these goals, 3418 university students (1859 males and 1559 females) majoring in engineering, medicine, and human sciences were selected through a stratified sampling procedures from 18 universities. Having identified the validity and reliability, a modified version of Laine's (1987) self-report questionnaire was administered to all the participants. Overall, based on the results of several ANOVA and Post Hoc Tests, it was found that all the students are highly motivated and have positive attitudes towards learning English, English language and culture. However, when computed separately, there were significant differences among learners' attitudes majoring in engineering, medicine and human sciences. Moreover, significant sex related differences were observed in terms of learners' attitudes towards English language and culture. The implications of this study in English language learning and teaching as well as curriculum planning have been discussed.
