Abstract :

Timbuktu, in what is now Mali, has been a symbol of Islamic culture and

Before 490 AH (the year Timbuktu was founded), this city was a place for storing 

commercial goods, and within two centuries of its existence, it became one of the 

most important cities in the Islamic world between the eighth and tenth centuries 

AH.

This remarkable transformation can be attributed to various factors, including the 

growth of trade and the spread of Islam

The location of this city on the trade routes from North to South and West Africa, 

the commercial activities of merchants, mutual tolerance between the rulers of 

West Africa (Ghana, Mali and Sangai) and merchants, the migration of the Musofi 

Sanhaja from North Africa and surrounding cities to this city, and their role as 

facilitators of trade and business, made Timbuktu the commercial center of West 

Africa

Also, the spread of Arabic (which was the language of trade), the activity of 

Muslim merchants in government courts, the arrival of Arab, Egyptian, Maghrebi 

and Andalusian scholars in the form of trade caravans and pilgrimages to 

Timbuktu, the actions of merchants in establishing Islamic centers and the activity 

of some of them as religious scholars, led to the formation of the Islamic 

community of Timbuktu

In this article, the author has examined the role of trade in the spread of Islam in 

Timbuktu, considering the hypothesis of the relationship between trade and the 

spread of Islam.method of tWest Africa for centuries
