Role of Computer Games in Moral Development in Children and Young Adults

Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to determine the role of computer game use in the moral development of students. The study was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design with control group. The population of the study consisted of all students studying in the second grade of elementary school in the fourth district of Qom province in the academic year of 1401-1402, of whom 36 were randomly selected and randomly assigned to two experimental (18 people including 9 boys and 9 girls) and control groups (18 people including 9 boys and 9 girls). The sample group answered the questionnaires of spiritual growth of Mo’enpoor (2012) in the pretest and posttest stages. The Minecraft game was also played online in groups and at a specific time by students for 20 days. For data analysis, the analysis of covariance method and SPSS software were used.The results showed that the use of computer games had an effect on the moral development of students (P> 0.001). The use of computer games had an effect on the dimensions of moral development (social morality, post-conventional morality, conventional morality, and pre-conventional morality) of students (P> 0.001). According to the findings of the study, it is suggested that the role of computer games in the moral development of children be considered in schools
