Abstract :

The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of Alexithymia in the relationship between experiences of childhood maltreatment and psychological distress with suicidal behavior in depressed adolescents. The research design was descriptive-correlational. A total of 214 depressed adolescents from the cities of Ardakan and Meybod were selected and participated in the study in 2023 using a convenience sampling method. Participants completed questionnaires assessing depression (Beck, 1996), suicidal behavior (Osman et al., 2001), experiences of childhood maltreatment (Bernstein et al., 1994), psychological distress (Kessler et al., 2002), and Alexithymia (Parker & Taylor, 1994). Data analysis was conducted within the framework of structural equation modeling using SPSS 28 and Amos 26 software. Findings revealed that the direct effect of childhood maltreatment on suicidal behavior was non-significant (p>0.05); however, the direct effects of psychological distress and Alexithymia on suicidal behavior were significant (p<0.05). Path analysis indicated that the mediating role of Alexithymia in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and suicidal behavior in depressed adolescents was significant (p<0.05), as well as the mediating role of Alexithymia in the relationship between psychological distress and suicidal behavior in this population (p<0.05). These findings support the complex influence of Alexithymia in the relationship between childhood maltreatment, psychological distress, and suicidal behavior in depressed adolescents, which may be considered in effective interventions aimed at reducing suicidal behavior in this demographic.
