The aim of the present mixed-method study is investigating the role of SE instruction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ PD. To do so, 30 EFL teachers and 150 of their students in different high schools in Zanjan, Iran were selected as the participants of the study. The convenience (availability) sampling procedure was used to select the participants. The students were asked to fill out the the teachers’ PD survey, and the questionnaire of SE was filled out by the teachers as the pretest. Then, the teachers received in-service training for SE with a specified syllabus. At the end of the training period, which lasted 5 sessions in a 1.5-month course, the students completed the teachers’ PD survey, and the teachers filled out the SE questionnaire again as the posttest. To analyze the results of the questionnaires as the quantitative data, a paired-samples t-test was employed. In the qualitative phase, an in-depth interview was held with the 30 teachers concerning their ideas towards the effects of SE instruction on their PD, and the collected data was analyzed through content analysis technique. The findings of the study revealed that the EFL teachers’ SE significantly affected their PD based on the results of the questionnaires and in-depth interviews. تفاصيل المقالة

Idioms are an intrinsic characteristic of every natural language and they are frequently used in spoken and written language; however, there has been insufficient research exploring the best strategies for teaching idioms to EFL learners. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cooperative and non-cooperative receptive and productive based activities on Iranian EFL learners’ idiom learning. To this purpose, 166 Iranian intermediate EFL learners were randomly assigned to the five groups: cooperative receptive group (CR), non-cooperative receptive group (NCR), cooperative productive group (CP), non-cooperative productive group (NCP), and a control group. Results from the receptive and productive vocabulary tests showed that all four experimental groups outperformed the control group in both immediate and delayed posttest. However, the CP and NCP instructions were more effective than the CR and NCR ones in in bringing about enhanced idiom learning. Furthermore, CR under the cooperative condition led to better learning compared to its non-cooperative type; however, the CP proved effective irrespective of the cooperative condition. Given the challenging nature of L2 idiom learning and its significance in developing language learners’ knowledge of English, the implications of this study were presented and discussed for teachers, students and syllabus designers. تفاصيل المقالة

This study, drawing on a dual theoretical standpoint constituting ecological systems theory (EST) and self-determination theory (SDT), compared Iranian novice and experienced EFL teachers’ remotivational strategies. The participants, selected based on convenience sampling technique, comprised two equal 32-member groups of novice and experienced EFL teachers teaching different proficiency levels at six language institutes. To gather data, semi-structured interviews were conducted. The results of thematic data analysis indicated that novice and experienced teachers were approximately similar in terms of the emerging theme instances situated within the integrative SDT/EST framework. Nonetheless, novice and experienced teachers were markedly different concerning the number of theme instances for each SDT facet positioned in the EST layers. Moreover, the results of Chi-square test demonstrated significant differences between novice and experienced teachers in terms of the number of themes existing in the SDT/EST frame. The results, enhancing teacher educators’ understanding of the similarities and disparities between novice and experienced teachers’ perceptions of remotivational strategies, can provide teachers and teacher educators with awareness concerning how remotivational strategies are nested across multiple systems while simultaneously being informed by a certain motivation-specific theory. تفاصيل المقالة
