Viable sweet potato production is hard to achieve with indiscriminate use of farm inputs, resulting to wastage and environmental damages, as consequences are common problems of arable crop farming in Abia State. Issues arising from farm input use and their corresponding implications for environment called for a study on suitable farming practices and farm-specific technical efficiency for optimal resource use in sweet potato production in Abia State. Data were obtained from 156 sweet potatoe farmers through a multistage sampling technique using a structured questionaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, relative frequency distribution, and the stochastic production frontier. Results showed that using inorganic fertilizer (65.378%) under rainfed production system with a frequent bush burning (66.67%) and low liming (5.8%) were very common practices with leaching, fragile soil, erosion, flooding, and soil acidity as consequences. Mixed cropping (63.46%) with improved varieties like TIS 8164 (71.2%) and 0087 (64.1%) were copping measures to some environmental challenges. Maximum Likelihood Estimates (MLE) showed a decreasing return to a scale of 0.236. The implication is that an increase in farm size and fertilizer application can significantly lead to a less than 0.06538 and 0.08142 proportionate increase in output of sweet potato respectively, or reduces it by less than 0.00413, with interest on borrowed capital. The gamma (0.0403) was less than unity and was significant at p < 0.05, implying that about 4.30% discripancies in observed and frontier output was due to technical inefficiencies of sweet potato farmers. The wide disparity in farmers’ technical efficiencies ranged from 0.298% to 99.4%, and a mean of 47.1% suggested a need to bridge the gap. Hence, a reduction in household size, farming experience, and sourcing of planting materials from NRCRI or IITA is believed to increase farmers’ technical inefficiency, which can be reduced with age and formal educational level of sweet Potato farmers in the area. All in all, the results suggest that reducing bush burning but increasing liming as well as including organic soil ammendments and irrigation practicies, when combined with the use of young and educated farmers, can reduce environmental damages and also increase farmers’ technical efficiency when it comes to sweet potato production in the area. One of the most important effects of exchange rate movementsisitseffecton the exporting price of different products. According to the new trade theories, market structure plays an important role in relating exchange rate depreciations to price declines. In Iran, exchange rate has increased in recent years.Inspired by this assumption, this paper attempts to investigate the impact of exchange rate movements on the exportprice of saffron (which is the most important non-oil export product after pistachio)in Iran over the period of 2001-2012.As shown by the results of the present study, the country effect (λi) for each destination is significant except for United States. In addition, the exchange rate’s coefficient is significant for all countries in our sample. Accordingly, as also indicated by the related literature, the hypothesis of the existence of competitive market is rejected, and this lends support to the idea thatprice discrimination in saffron marketis regularly applied by Iranian exporters, whichsuggeststhat the government should try to support this strategic product by suitable policies. This paper examines the effect of the poor road transportation network on crop production in one of the rural agrarian local government of Kwara State, Nigeria. A well-structured interview schedule was conducted to elicit information from 120 crop farmers using a two-stage sampling technique. Findings from the study revealed that the poor road transportation network in their area had led to a reduction in their income, longer time in transporting produce to more buoyant markets, as well as incurring high transportation costs. Chi-square analysis revealed that there was a significant relationship between age, educational level, years of farming experience, and the respondents’ perceived effects of poor road transportation network for their crop production. The study recommends an urgent intervention from government and stakeholders in terms of construction and rehabilitation of roads in these rural agrarian areas in an attempt to help improve the livelihoods of the farmers through enhancing transportation of produce to more buoyant markets in good condition and at less cost. The purpose of this study was to measure the technicalefficiency of canola farmers and determine the underpinningfactors. Required data were collected using stratified randomsampling method and questionnaire survey. In this context, 157canola farmers from Tabriz County, Iran, were asked to fill outthe questionnaire in 2012-2013 growing season. The technicalefficiency was evaluated using stochastic frontier approach. Theresults of inputs production elasticity indicated that all inputswere consumed in economic area. In addition, the highest (0.504)and lowest (0.095) elasticity rate was related to water consumptionand education level, respectively. The estimated technical efficiencydemonstrated that the highest and lowest technical efficiencieswere 25 and 95% with an average of 80%. It should be noted thatthe highest efficiency was observed in the farms with the areacovering 3-4 hectares. Furthermore, the estimated inefficiencymodel indicated that education level, training course number, and cultivated area negatively affected the inefficiency. Bycontrast, age of farmer had a positive effect on inefficiency. Asthe results show, educating and training farmers for the optimumuse of inputs as well as improving their knowledge as to promoteagricultural products should be taken into account.
