Developing a model for citizenship education utilizing a Grounded theory approach

Abstract :

Citizens’ behavior and the quality of their participation in community affairs are among the requirements of social capital and they are also among the indicators of the development of societies. With the decline in the quality of urban environment, the growth of social pathologies, and a decline in the quality of urban welfare, the need for the development and expansion of citizenship education in the city has become prominent. The purpose of this research is to develop a conceptual model for citizenship education. The present study is a qualitative research that was conducted using a grounded theory approach. The research population consisted of people specializing in education and citizenship rights, who were selected through a targeted sampling approach (15 people) as participants in the research. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews. For reliability and validity of the instrument, the views of participant and non-participating experts were used. Data were analyzed using content analysis method. Results of the analysis were based on a paradigmatic model including: causative conditions (necessity of having knowledge about rights and responsibilities, openness to new developments, quality of life, and expansion of social solidarity); focal category (citizenship concept and citizenship education), Strategies (creating opportunities for learning, attitude development about education, democratization of the welfare state, promotion of the political system); the context (the dynamics of law, welfare and social security); intervention conditions (lack of cultural development, the politicization of citizenship education, inefficiencies of Traditional education) and outcomes (lawmaking and democracy, social development) reflect the process of citizenship education
