The impact of battery on reliability performance of power system containing reservoir based tidal power plant

Abstract :
Tides are the result of the gravitational force between the moon and the earth and to some extent the gravitational force between the sun and the earth, as a result of which the waters in the open seas rise and fall during the day and night. The rising and falling sea water can be used to generate electricity. There are two ways to produce electrical power from tides. In the first type, which are known as current-type tidal power plants, turbines are used in the depths of the sea, and the kinetic energy of the tidal currents causes them to rotate and generate electricity. In the second type of tidal power plants, which are known as reservoir-type tidal power plants, a dam is built and it is possible to transfer water between the sea and the storage tank built behind the dam. Due to the occurrence of tides, when the water moves between the sea and the storage tank, it passes through the turbines installed inside the valves of the dam wall and electricity is generated by their rotation. One of the problems that tidal energy has, like other renewable energy sources, is that the height of tides changes over time, and therefore the production power of these power plants varies over time. Therefore, in the power system where the reservoir-type tidal plant has a significant contribution to electricity production, various aspects of the power system, including reliability, will be affected. In order to reduce the uncertainty of the production power of reservoir-type tidal plants, batteries with a large capacity can be used next to these plants. When the production capacity of the tidal power plant is high and exceeds the system load, the battery is charged, and when the production capacity of the tidal power plant is less than the required load, the battery can be discharged and participate in feeding the load. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of the battery on the reliability of the power system with the presence of a reservoir-type tidal plant is studied.
