Identification and Explanation of the Components and Dimensions of Research Self-Efficacy

Abstract :

The aim of the present study was to identify and explain the components and dimensions of research self-efficacy among postgraduate students at Islamic Azad University in Hormozgan Province. The study employed a qualitative design utilizing an inductive coding approach. To explore the components and dimensions of research self-efficacy, semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts, faculty members, and university research administrators in Hormozgan Province. Through purposive sampling, theoretical saturation was achieved after conducting 20 interviews. The researcher, serving as the primary research instrument, employed interviews as the main data collection technique. The study population consisted of experts, faculty members, and research administrators from universities across Hormozgan Province. The analysis led to the identification of six key categories reflecting the components and dimensions of research self-efficacy. These included: (1) mastery of research skills and scientific methods; (2) mastery of the stages and procedures of conducting research; (3) possession of relevant personal attributes and communication skills for research; (4) a positive internal orientation toward research; (5) mastery of domain-specific knowledge; and (6) acceptance within the relevant scientific community. The results further indicated that three categories—namely mastery of research skills and scientific methods, a positive internal orientation toward research, and mastery of domain-specific knowledge—emerged as the most prominent, while the remaining categories demonstrated comparatively lower levels of significance.
