The Relationship between Parents' Mobile and Internet Addiction with Children's Happiness, Mental Health and Loneliness

Abstract :

The aim of the present study was to predict children’s mental health, loneliness, and happiness based on parents’ addiction to mobile phones and virtual space. The research method was descriptive and correlational. The statistical population consisted of all mothers and their primary school children in Semnan city during the first semester of the 2024–2025 academic year, totaling 1,900 individuals. The sample size was determined as 319 individuals based on Krejcie and Morgan’s table (1970) and selected through multi-stage cluster random sampling. Data were collected using the Happiness Questionnaire (Aminpour & Zare’, 2011), the Mental Health Questionnaire (Speroffken & Gadow, 1984), the Loneliness Questionnaire (Asher et al., 1984), and the Mobile Phone and Virtual Space Addiction Questionnaire (Young, 1996). Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 23. The results of Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was a significant negative relationship between parents’ addiction to mobile phones and virtual space and children’s happiness (r = -0.28). Furthermore, there was a significant positive relationship between parents’ addiction to mobile phones and virtual space and children’s mental health problems (r = 0.15), as well as between parents’ addiction and children’s loneliness (r = 0.19).
