Intertextual Reinterpretation of the Formal Structure of Parthian Urbanism with an Emphasis on Epistemological Dimensions

Abstract :

In the history of Iranian urban development, the Parthian period represents a formative stage and an independent spatial paradigm that stands between the ceremonial–royal system of the Achaemenids and the ritual–centralized structure of the Sasanians. The main objective of this study is to attain a deep understanding of the urban forms of Iran during the Parthian era through an analysis of cognitive dimensions using an intertextual approach, and to examine the manifestation of these dimensions in urban form. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of Parthian urbanism, the spatial discourse of the Achaemenid and Seleucid periods—as the pre-texts of the Parthian era—has first been examined. Subsequently, the cognitive dimensions of the Parthian period are analyzed as the main text of urban formation, followed by an exploration of Sasanian urbanism as the post-text. This qualitative study, based on the intertextual analysis method, reinterprets the formation of Parthian urban systems by drawing on cognitive dimensions derived from archaeological data and urban plans. The findings indicate that, unlike the palace-centered model of previous eras, Parthian cities were organized according to principles of polycentrism, functionalism, and mixed land use. The Silk Road, as a vital civilizational artery, played a key role in linking these cities to broader international networks. Overall, Parthian urbanism can be characterized as an indigenous and dynamic model—a birthplace of integrative and context-oriented spatial thought. It represents neither a mere imitation of predecessors nor a complete rupture, but rather a creative continuity within the Iranian urban tradition. In the evolution of Iranian urbanism, the Parthian period played a crucial role in the transition from the monarchic and centralized structures of the Achaemenids to more localized, polycentric, and functional spatial patterns. Through an intertextual perspective, the spatial structure of this period functioned not only as an intermediary link between the Achaemenid–Seleucid pre-text and the Sasanian post-text, but also as a creative reimagining of form, meaning, and function within the urban fabric. Formal expressions such as circular layouts, organic organization, and functional layering testify to the emergence of a new spatial discourse in pre-Islamic Iranian urbanism.
