Abstract :

Assyria and Elam-considered among the most significant empires from the third millennium BC until 600 BC-emerged and declined nearly in tandem, with only minor temporal differences. Over a span of roughly two thousand years, they repeatedly clashed, yet neither managed to overthrow the other from imperial dominance-until Ashurbanipal (the renowned and mighty king of Assyria). Through multiple confrontations with Elam between 665 and roughly 640 BC, culminating in six full-scale wars, Ashurbanipal ultimately inscribed Elam's imperial demise into the annals of history as his own triumphant legacy. Thus, the most significant political-military relations between Assyria and Elam undoubtedly belong to the era of Ashurbanipal. The Assyrian king first participated in his initial war against Elam during the reign of Urtak-Inshushinak. He then launched the Battle of Til-Tuba (Tuliz) against Elam. His third war with Elam was known as the Battle of Der (Badra), and through political-military dealings with Temti-ḫalki II and Indabibi (kings of Elam), a fourth war also took place. During the Battle of Madaktu (his fifth campaign) and ultimately in the final confrontation - the Battle of Susa - Ashurbanipal succeeded in decisively concluding the Elamite imperial saga. In what was perhaps an unprecedented move, he razed the capital city of Susa, Madaktu, and other Elamite cities to the ground. The Elamite king and numerous nobles were captured, and the Assyrian emperor ascended his throne of victory. Yet history's irony soon manifested when the Assyrian Empire itself fell in its confrontation with a coalition led by the Medes - in which Elamite remnants played their part - bringing both empires' stories to a close.
