Investigating the relationship between physical components and social behaviors in student dormitories (Case study: female dormitory of student- University of Art)

Abstract :
Student residence is a place for non-native students to live in connection with the university where they study, which has been usually degraded to a "dormitory". The user of this place is mostly young people with different cultural backgrounds and dissimilar levels of social behavior. The purpose of this study is to find the relationship between physical components and social behaviors in student dormitories considering behavioral characteristics of privacy, personal space, territory and crowding, developed in Altman's theory. The methodology of this research is the qualitative and case-study strategy. So, after a review of the theories related to social behaviors, the female students, living in one of the residences of University of Art have been selected as the target community to study. The necessary data has been collected through the observations, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with students. The data analysis shows a number of physical weaknesses that influence on social behavior indicators and dissatisfaction of residents. At the end, the article proposes the design strategies and solutions to consider in architectural design of the student residence, based on social behavior indicators. According to research findings, creating spatial hierarchies, incorporating desired nooks in shared spaces, and introducing pause spaces in active areas are effective strategies for achieving various levels of privacy. Suggestions such as using multi-purpose and flexible furniture, designing controllable partitions by individuals can be proposed to maintain personal space. Additionally, spatial division through movable partitions, furniture, and diverse flooring, creating domains for entrances, flexibility in spatial arrangement to establish personal territories are factors that will contribute to efficient identification of territories. To reduce the sense of crowding, attention to aspects such as increasing height in communal spaces,and proper distribution of service spaces such as kitchens are recommended. Furthermore, to ensure desired crowding, the design of communal spaces for events and interdisciplinary studios is suggested
