Modeling the Improvement of Urban Tourism Culture with a Grounded Theory Approach

Abstract :

This research was conducted with the aim of presenting a model for improving urban tourism culture in Isfahan, using the Grounded Theory approach. Since tourism is inherently a cultural phenomenon and cultural differences are considered the main motivation for travel, this model is presented to achieve sustainable development and for application by stakeholders in Isfahan's tourism industry (such as travel agencies, cultural heritage organizations, hotels, and businesses). The goal is to aid in the development of the tourism industry, design strategies for attracting tourists, manage tourism-related damages, and enhance the overall tourism culture in the city.

The research methodology was mixed-methods (qualitative-quantitative) and applied. In the qualitative phase, 7 to 12 tourism experts were interviewed, and concepts were identified through open, axial, and selective coding (initially 16 axial codes and 65 open codes). Subsequently, using the Delphi technique in three rounds, key categories—including causal conditions, contextual conditions, intervening factors, strategies, and consequences—were refined, ultimately reaching a consensus on 48 open codes and 11 selective codes. In the quantitative phase, the statistical population comprised 384 individuals, including citizens, employees, vendors, and tourists in Isfahan's tourist centers (especially hotels and Naqsh-e Jahan Square), selected through convenience random sampling. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and the Partial Least Squares (PLS) algorithm were used for the final modeling.

The results indicated that the model for improving urban tourism culture includes 3 causal conditions, 2 contextual conditions, 1 intervening factor, and 2 main strategies. This model ultimately leads to three major outcomes: positive socio-cultural impacts of tourism (factor loading 0.714), negative socio-cultural impacts (0.599), and cultural development (0.530). The research concludes that designing a model for improving tourism culture in Isfahan requires careful attention to a wide range of factors, criteria, and sub-criteria to achieve maximum effectiveness.
