The Effectiveness of Muscular Relaxation on Depression, Anxiety and blood glucose in Type I diabetic women

Abstract :

This study aimed to assess the effect of relaxation on depression, anxiety and HbA1c in type I diabetic women. In this study which was a quasi-experimental with pre-test, post-test and control group, the population was all type I diabetic women which referred to the Diabetes Clinic in Kermanshah. The 24 of patients were selected by available sampling method and randomly divided into experimental and control groups. For pre-test the scores of Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger anxiety and HbA1c tests were recorded. Then the experimental group during a nine-week (twice a week) participated in relaxation session and after three month subjects in both groups were post-tested. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, Levene Test, analysis of covariance were used. In the post test there was no significant difference in average depression scores of two groups (p= 3.07) but, trait anxiety average, state anxiety average and blood glucose of experimental group were decreased significantly in comparison to pre-test (p= 34.14, p= 11.16, p= 10.8). So, it concluded that relaxation decreases anxiety and helps to better control of blood glucose in type I diabetic women but, this technique which has been used in this study was not effective in reducing depression in these patients.
