Explaining the Mutual Influence of Music and Architecture on the Creation of Space (Case Study: Baroque Period)

Abstract :
This study examines the bidirectional interaction between architecture and music in shaping the spatial dynamics of the Baroque period. The Baroque era, characterized by its harmonious and theatrical integration of the arts, provides an ideal context for this investigation. While prior studies have explored the individual influence of each art form, comparative research on their mutual impact in spatial creation remains limited. Some scholars have addressed structural parallels such as rhythm and harmony, yet the dynamic interplay between the two in spatial experience has been less explored. Understanding this interaction could contribute to redefining contemporary artistic spaces and creating multisensory environments. The aim of this article is to analyze the reciprocal influence of music and architecture in the formation of Baroque spaces and to uncover how their shared principles are reflected in the audience's sensory experience. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the research examines prominent works, analyzes qualitative data, and incorporates survey responses. Findings reveal that during the Baroque period, music and architecture mutually influenced one another through principles such as dynamic movement, fluid symmetry, and spatial composition. Music, with its rhythmic and textural qualities, inspired architects in designing theatrical spaces, while architecture, through acoustics and spatial hierarchy, shaped musical compositions. This symbiotic relationship resulted in the creation of cohesive, multidimensional spaces.
