A Reading of Social Issues in the Regional Stories of Rasoul Parvizi and Nasim Khaksar

Abstract :

This study, based on the premise that examining the literature and public culture of a society can be used as a powerful tool for identifying and analyzing the social issues of each period, and can help in better understanding the reasons for their emergence and ways to address them, adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to re-read the social issues in the regional stories of Rasoul Parvizi and Nasim Khaksar. Parvizi, in “Patched Pants” and “Drunken Gypsy,” addresses the social issues of the rural areas of the southern region; Khaksar, in the stories “Seedling” and “Bread and Flower,” focuses on the social issues of the coastal areas of the southern region. The findings show that although both authors, considering the geographical, social, and cultural differences of their regions, have addressed specific types of social issues, both have critically and realistically attempted to raise awareness in society by providing an accurate depiction of these problems. Some of these issues, such as illicit relationships, addiction, child abuse, theft, and lack of hygiene facilities, are seen in both regions. Issues specific to the coastal area include divorce, widowhood and the vulnerability of women, suicide, and smuggling. In the rural area, superstition, women’s coquetry, men’s desire for variety, and polygamy are presented as social deviations and issues; thus, it can be concluded that the type of climate is effective in creating certain types of social issues and problems.
