Abstract :
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of exchange rate and interest rate uncertainty on economic growth and development in selected Islamic countries.
Methodology
This research is analytical and descriptive in terms of content, and applied in terms of purpose. The required content was collected through a documentary-library method, and the relevant statistical data were extracted from global statistical websites. The models in this study were estimated using annual data from 40 selected Islamic countries during the period 2010–2021 through the simultaneous equations system approach. Moreover, a recurrent neural network method was used to calculate the uncertainty indices of exchange rate and interest rate.
Findings
The results showed that exchange rate and interest rate uncertainty had a negative effect on the economic growth of the countries under study. It was also observed that such uncertainty negatively affected their economic development.
Originality / Value
The effects of exchange rate and interest rate uncertainty on economic growth and development remain among the economic issues with a notable research gap. Accordingly, it is recommended that macroeconomic policymakers in monetary, fiscal, and exchange rate sectors consider the adverse consequences of exchange rate and interest rate uncertainty on the countries’ growth and development, in order to prevent deviation from long-term, planned growth paths.
