Abstract :

The expansion of urbanization and the development of dense buildings in the warm and dry climates of Iran have resulted in increased energy consumption and a decline in Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). Zero Energy Buildings (ZEBs), as a novel solution in sustainable architecture, are designed with the aim of reducing energy loss and enhancing environmental quality. This research aims to analyze the impact of urban climatic features on the IAQ of ZEBs, utilizing a combination of numerical modeling and spatial analysis.

In this study, Landsat 8 and Sentinel-5P satellite data were processed to extract Land Surface Temperature (LST), solar radiation, and the concentration of pollutants NO₂ and PM₂.₅, which were subsequently integrated within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. Subsequently, climatic and building data for the Janbazan neighborhood of Semnan City were imported into DesignBuilder software to simulate parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, ventilation rate, and CO₂ concentration within the zero energy buildings.

The results indicated that in areas characterized by higher surface temperatures and greater building density, the average indoor temperature and CO₂ concentration increased, leading to a reduction in natural ventilation. The positive correlation observed between solar radiation and indoor temperature suggests that urban climatic features play a decisive role in the thermal performance of ZEBs. Integrating remote sensing data, GIS, and energy modeling in DesignBuilder provides an efficient, climate-responsive approach for urban planning and enhancing indoor air quality in warm and dry regions.
