An analysis of curriculum in primary educational system in Islamic Republic of Iran after citizenship education

Abstract :
In this article, the researcher is to analyze the curriculum of the primary education in Iran from citizenship education perspective. To do this, the researcher tired to determine the distance between the goals and the present content of citizenship education curriculum in primary schools by analyzing the fourth and fifth-grade textbooks in terms of 27 categories related to citizenship. Then a checklist containing 45 factors was employed to observe and evaluate learning-teaching activities concerning citizenship education. Then the researcher asked students for their opinions concerning extracurricular activities that may improve citizenship behavior. The results show that citizenship factors have not been evenly distributed in textbook materials. Teaching-learning activities carried out by teachers were below average. The design and performance of supplemental citizenship education in primary schools is not satisfactory. Therefore, the answer to the research question ‘Is present primary education curriculum satisfactory enough for citizenship education?’ is no. The answer is confirmed by the findings
