Content Analysis of the Eleventh and Twelfth Grade Islamic Education Textbooks of Afghanistan Based on the Gunning and Flesch Readability Formulas

Abstract :

The present study aimed to examine the degree of ease and difficulty of reading the texts and materials of the eleventh and twelfth grade Islamic Education textbooks of Afghanistan on the basis of the Gunning and Flesch readability formulas. In this regard, the method of content analysis according to the Gunning and Flesch readability formulas was employed. The statistical population of the study comprised all the texts and materials contained in the eleventh and twelfth grade Islamic Education textbooks of Afghanistan. Sampling was conducted through
the simple random sampling method. The data collection tool was the Gunning and Flesch readability formulas. The findings of the study indicated that, according to the Gunning formula, the mean readability score of the eleventh grade Islamic Education textbook was (7.92), which corresponds to the seventh grade level and above. The mean readability score of the twelfth grade Islamic Education textbook was (8.92), which corresponds to the eighth grade level and slightly higher. According to the Flesch formula, the mean readability score of the eleventh grade Islamic Education textbook was (68.73), which, in the Flesch readability scale, falls between (60–70), indicating that its readability level is suitable for the eighth to ninth grade. The mean readability score of the twelfth grade Islamic Education textbook was (82.89), which, in the Flesch readability scale, falls between (80–90), indicating a readability level suitable for the sixth grade. Therefore, the readability levels of these two textbooks are not appropriate for the eleventh and twelfth grades.
