Abstract :
In this research, the discourse structure of Surah Takwīr is analyzed through a semiotic-interpretative approach to examine the role and function of sensory-motor and emotional systems in the process of meaning production and the conveyance of the Surah’s message. The main objective of this study is to reveal how the synergy of these two systems aids in conveying the key concepts of the Surah and attaining deeper layers of meaning. The fundamental research question is how sensory-motor and emotional discourse systems are organized in this Surah
and what role they play in understanding the semantic and evaluative context of the verses.
The methodology of the research is based on semiotic-interpretative analysis, employing a descriptive-analytical approach. Surah Takwīr, as a Quranic text, is categorized into two distinct discourses: the first discourse comprises verses 1 to 14, while the second discourse includes verses 15 to 29. In each discourse, the semiotic and semantic dimensions of the verses are thoroughly examined, with a particular focus on sensory, motor, emotional, and evaluative elements that contribute to meaning and message production. In the first discourse (verses 1 to 14), a sensory-motor and emotional system is established through the description of extensive cosmic transformations and events indicative of the end of natural order and the advent of the Day of Judgment. This system creates a cautionary and awakening scenario for the audience by stimulating visual and auditory senses and evoking feelings of fear and astonishment. The precise sensory imagery and the depiction of cosmic movements, such as the darkening of the sun, the falling of stars, the rolling up of the heavens, and the movement of mountains, elevate the audience to a level of sensory-motor and emotional perception that guarantees impact and semantic persuasion. In the second discourse (verses 15 to 29), the semantic direction of the Surah shifts from describing cosmic events to elucidating the truth of revelation and the status
of the Prophet and the angel of revelation. In this section, the emotional system emphasizes concepts such as trust, honesty, power, and confidence, creating a calm, reassuring, and persuasive atmosphere for the acceptance of revelation and the Surah’s message by highlighting the characteristics of the angel of revelation and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Concurrently, the sensory-motor system presents a vivid and dynamic image of the movement of revelation from its divine source to its reception and proclamation, leading the audience through the understanding of the Quranic guidance process and conveying the dynamic meaning of revelation. The findings of the research indicate that these two discourse systems (sensory-motor and emotional) operate interwoven and harmoniously throughout Surah Takwīr, playing a fundamental role in conveying the Surah’s message. This analysis demonstrates that the sensory-motor discourse, through dynamic imagery and emphasis on movements and changes, guides the audience from a superficial understanding to deeper layers of meaning. Conversely,
the emotional discourse system, by activating feelings such as fear, astonishment, trust, and reassurance, creates conditions for the acceptance of the meaning of revelation and belief in the truth of the Surah’s message. Overall, these two systems cohesively and systematically shape the semantic structure of the Surah, lending greater depth and potency to its final message, which serves as a warning regarding the Day of Judgment and reliance on revelation. This research illustrates the capacity of the semiotic-interpretative approach in uncovering the hidden and meaningful dimensions of Quranic texts, potentially providing a novel foundation for Quranic studies.
