The impact of Perceived Procedural Injustice on Turnover Intention in Clubs with the Mediating Role of Emotional Burnout: A Case Study of Professional League Athletes in Iran

Abstract :

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of perceived procedural injustice on the intention to leave the club, with the mediating role of emotional exhaustion: A case study of athletes in Iranian professional leagues.

Methods: The research method was descriptive and survey-based. The statistical population of this study included all professional athletes competing in Iranian professional leagues (approximately 1,250 individuals). Stratified random sampling was used to select the participants. The statistical sample size was determined to be 330 individuals. Data were collected using the Perceived Procedural Injustice questionnaire by Niehoff and Moorman (1993), the Emotional Exhaustion subscale by Schaufeli (2002), and the Intention to Leave the Club questionnaire by Boothma and Roth (2013). The questionnaires were reviewed and confirmed by five sport management professors to assess their face and content validity. The reliability of the questionnaires was calculated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, which was confirmed at 0.86, 0.91, and 0.83, respectively.

Results: The results indicated that perceived organizational injustice has a significant positive effect on the emotional exhaustion of professional athletes. Another finding showed that perceived organizational injustice has a significant positive effect on the intention to leave the club. The effect of emotional exhaustion on the intention to leave the club was also positive and significant. Finally, the results revealed that the effect of perceived organizational injustice on professional athletes' intention to leave the club, with the mediating role of emotional exhaustion, is positive and significant.

Conclusions: According to the study's results, a sense of injustice in sports clubs can lead to negative attitudinal and behavioral consequences, such as emotional exhaustion and professional athletes' intention to leave the club, resulting in significant detrimental effects.
