Analyzing the Challenges and Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence in the Educational System with an Emphasis on the Professional Development of Teachers

Abstract :
The aim of the present study was to explore the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence with an emphasis on teachers' professional development. This study was qualitative-quantitative in approach and applied-descriptive in purpose, and through in-depth semi-structured interviews, it developed and validated a conceptual framework using thematic analysis in 2024. The statistical population consisted of 135 experts in the field of education and higher education, of whom 12 were selected through purposive sampling using the saturation rule for the qualitative part and 100 were selected as a sample using the Cochran method for the quantitative part. To calculate reliability, the intra-subject agreement method or two coders was used, which is equal to 79 percent. Also, Atlasti 8 software was used for qualitative analysis and coding, and SPSS26 was used for quantitative data analysis. According to the results, the role of artificial intelligence can be classified into 9 organizing themes in terms of opportunities and challenges for teachers' professional development. Opportunities were identified with 4 organizing themes, respectively: integration of technology with educational goals, educational networking capabilities, globalization of education, and creation of teachers' career value. The challenges are also categorized into 5 organizing themes in order: talent gap, teacher and student security and privacy, ongoing system maintenance, and lack of integration capabilities. The final model of this research can be useful in implementing and operationalizing artificial intelligence for teacher professional development.
