Analysis of Sanai's lyric poetry based on Claude Levi-Strauss's theory of dual oppositions

Abstract :

Dual oppositions are one of the important and fundamental components of structuralist theory that has its roots in ancient and mythical beliefs of mankind. According to Strauss, dual oppositions are the basic structure of all human cultures and all methods of human thinking. One of the components and characteristics that attract the reader's and audience's minds in Sanai's lyric poetry is the dual opposition, which is evident at the level of vocabulary, superstructure and deep structure of sentences, and the arrangement of content. The author of this article believes that considering the two different periods of Sanai's life - the period of neglect and eulogy, and the period of punishment and mysticism - his lyric poetry can be examined and analyzed based on the theory of dual oppositions and the methods that the poet uses to achieve it can be enumerated and revealed. This research, with a descriptive-analytical approach, uses the library method. First, the sources on dual oppositions are examined from the perspective of structuralists, and then, with this approach, the analysis of Sanai's sonnets is carried out. One of the achievements of this research is that dual oppositions in Sanai's sonnets are manifested at the level of vocabulary, concept (deep structure), phonetic structure, imagery, and paradox, and have artistic and aesthetic functions.
