Abstract :
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the mediating role of cognitive regulation of emotion in the relationship between family functioning and academic well-being of students. The descriptive-correlation research method was structural modeling. The statistical population included second year high school students of Birjand city in the academic year of 2022-2023 (approximately 13,000 students), and 350 people were selected as the sample size by stratified random sampling. The research tools included Academic Wellbeing Questionnaire (AWBQ) by Tominin-Sweeney et al. (2012), Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) by Garnevsky et al. (2001) and Family Assessment Instrument (FAD) by Epstein et al. (1983). Structural equation analysis was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that the direct effect of family functioning on academic well-being was not significant (P<0.05). The results also indicated that the indirect effect of family functioning on academic well-being was mediated by maladaptive emotion regulation (P=0.002), but the mediating role of adaptive emotion regulation was not significant (P<0.05). According to the results obtained, psychologists at school counseling centers, who deal mostly with the student population and whose academic well-being problems are the main reasons for their referrals to these centers, can pay attention to the role of cognitive emotion regulation with regard to their family functioning.
