Abstract :

A symbol is one of the most fascinating areas of creativity in literature. At certain times when artists were unable to express their intended concepts openly, they resorted to indirect or symbolic expression. Social symbols are generally one of the most popular areas for presenting themes created with a critical and sometimes political approach. The present study aim is to examine social symbols in the poems of Mohammad Reza Shafiei Kadkani (M. Sereshk). The research method is descriptive-analytical and uses library resources. The findings show that some of the symbols in Shafiei’s poetry are the creation and elaboration of his poetic ideas and imaginations, and others refer to the structure of contemporary poetry, which includes micro-symbols, macro-symbols, and organic symbols. The lyrical language of this poet is symbolic and emblematic, considering the chaotic conditions of Iranian society in the 1940s and 1950s, which was characterized by poverty, corruption, and oppression. However, he does not exaggerate in using symbols. The practical use of imaginary forms such as symbols, along with their aesthetic aspect, is one of his tools for awakening and awareness of the people. Therefore, the most important poetic symbols of Shafiei Kadkani are social symbols. In addition to social events, he has used nature and natural phenomena in a symbolic way to express his intentions. Therefore, after social symbols, nature and its elements are considered to be the most frequent poetic symbols in his poetry. In addition to the aforementioned cases, some of the symbols revealed in Shafiei Kadkani's poetry were based on poets from his hometown, contemporaries, or predecessors. Of course, this influence is more related to Shafii's early poetic works.
