Abstract :
Background and objective: During the last century, human activities such as unsustainable industrial and economic development have led to severe consequences like diseases, air pollution crises, acid rains, and climate changes. These events have raised awareness about environmental issues, leading to the emergence of the environmental awareness movement in the early 1960s and the subsequent formation of environmental journalism. In Iran, environmental journalism, although relatively new since the mid-1970s, has gained a prominent position among other areas of journalism. This research aims to investigate the relationship between the effectiveness of environmental journalism and the sustainability of society's consumption patterns, which is a significant indicator of society's concern for environmental issues.
Materials and Methods: This study examined the relationship between variables using descriptive statistics and a researcher-made questionnaire. The sample size was determined using the random sampling method and Morgan's table, which indicated that the appropriate size was 384 people or more. 401 people participated in the survey for this study. The regression model fit was also evaluated using the Pearson correlation coefficient and the coefficient of determination index, which indicated a suitable model fit with a value of 0.92. Additionally, descriptive findings revealed that over 50 percent of respondents had very little awareness of the concept of sustainable consumption, highlighting the significance of this research.
Findings: The research findings demonstrate a positive and direct correlation between the effectiveness of environmental journalism and the sustainability of society's consumption patterns.
Discussion and Conclusion: The effectiveness of environmental journalism in Iran needs to be strengthened through the participation of policy-makers in the media, support from legal and regulatory institutions, and the attention of media managers in organizing specialized editorials in accordance with sustainable development patterns. Additionally, the use of up-to-date information platforms is crucial in achieving this goal.
