The Impact of Sports Sector Development on Social Welfare Considering the Threshold Role of Government Oil Revenues: The Case of Selected Oil Countries

Abstract :
Sport has long been recognized as one of the main components of physical activity that significantly contributes to individual health and social welfare. Among them, there are factors that can affect this relationship, including oil revenues. Accordingly, the main pourpose of this study is investigate the impact of sports sector development on social welfare, considering the threshold role of oil revenues in selected oil-producing countries. To test the research hypothesis, macroeconomic information from 15 oil-exporting countries was used during the period 2012 to 2023. Given the mixed nature of the data, multiple regression using pooled data with the PSTR approach was used to test the research hypotheses. The research findings show that in the first regime and when oil revenues are less than 0.44, the sports sector development variable has a positive effect on the social welfare variable, with a coefficient of 0.15, while in the second regime and when oil revenues are more than 0.44, the sports sector development variable has a positive effect on the social welfare variable, with a coefficient of 0.39. Other findings also showed that per capita income and government size have positive and significant effects on social welfare, and inflation and exchange rates have negative and significant effects on social welfare. Therefore, it can be concluded that if oil revenues increase above their threshold values, the effect of sports sector development on social welfare will be strengthened.
