Mentioning the location of a poem and its impact on understanding and interpreting the poem

Abstract :

Interpretation and explication of literary texts are important topics in literary criticism. Various modern perspectives on literary criticism and interpretation acknowledge that the text itself can be one of the most important factors in analyzing and interpreting that text. The paratextual elements of a text can also play a role in its analysis and interpretation. The place where a poem is composed, as mentioned by the poet, may appear either within the text or as a peripheral element, offering new dimensions for better analysis and interpretation to the audience. This research is conducted using a descriptive-analytical method, and a case study of several poems by contemporary Iranian poets and world literature indicates that the mention of the place of composition by the poet can occur in five ways: 1) explicit mention of the location, 2) implicit mention of the location, 3) mention of minor locations that do not include major ones, 4) mention of travel and means of transportation as the place where the poem was written, and 5) mention of imaginary and mythical locations. In this study, in addition to providing a brief overview of the importance of interpreting a literary text, the issue of self-narration interpretation and the mention of the place of composition as a factor in self-narration interpretation is also addressed. Furthermore, for each of the five categories of place mention in poetry, examples from contemporary Iranian literature and world literature are provided, and an analysis of each poem based on their categorization of the place of composition is conducted. Awareness of the place where the poem was composed facilitates a more precise critique of the poem.
