Abstract :
Today, with the advancement of new technologies and the expansion of the smart city concept, many cities have begun to create the necessary infrastructure for introducing such technologies. The smartening of cities can be done in various economic and cultural-artistic infrastructure dimensions. One of the emerging technologies that can significantly contribute to the smartening of cities in the cultural and artistic domain is Augmented Reality (AR). AR has the ability to integrate the virtual world with the surrounding real world, which can guide the audience to perform specific activities while wandering through urban spaces. In fact, models, writings, sounds, and any other designed virtual elements can be linked to the real world using AR display tools such as mobile phones or tablets. Therefore, the research question is: What applications, opportunities, and challenges can Augmented Reality have in urban spaces? This study attempts to evaluate the role of this technology in urban spaces through a descriptive-analytical approach, reviewing the literature on this topic, and examining successful global implementations. It also examines the opportunities that AR can play in the presence of individuals and tourists, as well as the technical and economic challenges of using this technology in urban spaces. Finally, after presenting the nature of Augmented Reality, the necessary hardware and actions for its implementation, and a brief overview of its history, the areas where AR can be applied in cities are explained. This research can serve as an introduction to more specialized and in-depth studies in various areas of urban design and planning, enabling urban specialists and stakeholders to make more creative use of AR and move towards smartening cities
