Abstract :
Introduction: The reduction of feed particle size after pelleting is recognized as the second most energy-intensive factor in the broiler industry. Objective: To investigate the effect of particle size and enzyme addition on growth performance and carcass characteristics of broilers fed barley-based diets.
Materials and Methods: A total of 288 commercial Ross 308 broiler chickens were used in a completely randomized design with a 2×3 factorial experiment with 6 treatments, 4 replications, and 12 birds per replication. Experimental variables included particle size levels (healthy, medium at 5 mm, and fine at 4 mm), and two levels of enzyme supplementation (0% and 0.055%) were investigated.
Results: The effect of barley particle size on feed intake was not significant, but body weight gain and feed conversion ratio showed significant differences (p<0.05), such that broilers fed barley with fine particles showed greater weight gain and better feed conversion ratio. Enzyme supplementation also did not affect body weight gain but significantly reduced feed intake and feed conversion ratio (p<0.05). The percentage of birds feeding and standing was also significantly affected by the size of the barley particles, such that birds receiving fine-grained barley showed the highest percentage of feeding and the lowest percentage of standing.
Discussion: The beneficial effects of the enzyme were affected by the particle size, and by changing the size of the barley particles, the effects of the enzyme improved.
