A survey on the prevalence of Cysticercus bovis and Sarcocystis spp. in slaughtered animals in Khorramabad abattoir from 2012 to 2021

Abstract :

Effective disease control and management necessitate successful monitoring. Abattoir inspections present numerous opportunities for efficiently collecting disease data from slaughtered animals. The significance of Cysticercus bovis and Sarcocystis spp. from a public health perspective, is because they cause co-infection of humans and animals. This retrospective study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of Cysticercus bovis and macroscopic cysts of Sarcocystisspp. in slaughtered animals in Khoramabad city. Over ten years (2012-2021), this study investigated the prevalence of Cysticercus bovis and Sarcocystis parasites in cattle, sheep, and goats. Data was analyzed using SPSS Statistics to compare the disease prevalence among different species of slaughtered animals during seasonal and annual periods. The findings revealed Cysticercus bovis and Sarcocystis spp. have a seasonal pattern, so Cysticercus bovis is more prevalent during the summer, while Sarcocystis spp. infections were more common in autumn. In addition, Sarcocystis spp. in sheep had a much higher prevalence rate than in cattle and goats, and despite the decline in the occurrence of Sarcocystisspp. over time, its prevalence in sheep remains high. In general, the occurrence of these parasitic diseases in ruminants has decreased in recent years. However, regions with higher prevalence can serve as sources of parasitic infections, posing a potential threat of future outbreaks. Therefore, it is important to employ efficient management methods to control diseases, considering the outbreak season, intermediate hosts, pasture management techniques, and strategic treatment.
